After losing in the Stanley Cup Final for the second consecutive year, the Edmonton Oilers head into the offseason facing a major question ahead of the NHL 2025–26 season. Now, the uncertainty centers not only on the future of superstar Connor McDavid but also on the goaltending position.

The main concern for the Oilers is whether their current goaltending setup is enough to support a championship-caliber project. The tandem of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard played a key role during parts of the recent playoffs, especially in the series against the Vegas Golden Knights, where Skinner posted over 127 consecutive scoreless minutes.

Still, doubts surrounding the goalie position during the Final against the Panthers have only increased the uncertainty. And with the front office looking to build perfection around McDavid, the team’s general manager, Stan Bowman, reportedly issued a statement to address the matter.

What Bowman reportedly said about the Oilers’ goaltending

NHL insider John Shannon cited Bowman’s thoughts in a breaking report: “At a certain point… do you still want to address what’s gonna happen in goal? I would think that’s probably the biggest question; at the same time, talking to Stan Bowman, he seemed quite satisfied,” Shannon revealed on Inside Sports.

Bowman has been cautious with his public comments in recent months. Since arriving in July 2024, he has prioritized roster stability and avoided impulsive moves in net. However, McDavid’s continued commitment, he remains the centerpiece of the franchise. may depend in part on how the organization addresses this issue.

It remains to be seen whether Bowman’s conservative approach clashes with McDavid’s ambitions. The Oilers captain has made it clear he wants a roster built to match his elite performance as he continues to chase his first Stanley Cup. The risk is that McDavid could begin to reassess his future if he doesn’t see bold steps taken toward the championship he’s longed for.
