Macklin Celebrini, the young star of the San Jose Sharks, is preparing for a special moment: his first matchup against Alex Ovechkin, a living legend of ice hockey. Celebrini, who recalls meeting Ovechkin as a child, now has the chance to create a more meaningful memory when the Sharks host the Washington Capitals.

This game marks a significant milestone, as Celebrini, the first overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, will face Ovechkin, the first overall pick in the 2004 Draft. The matchup represents a generational clash between two exceptional talents, with Ovechkin in the final stretch of his legendary career.

The anticipation is palpable, especially as Ovechkin continues his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record of 894. With 886 goals to his name, including 33 this season, Ovechkin is just eight goals away from making history.

Legends and new promises: A Legacy on the Ice

The longevity of Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby, who are both excelling in their 20th NHL seasons, serves as an inspiration for Celebrini. “It’s amazing,” Celebrini said. “You look at him and Sid and what they’re still doing—they’re still two of the best players in the world and how dominant they’ve been. ‘Ovi’ has like what, [33] goals now? That’s insane.”

Ovechkin, while admitting he hasn’t seen much of Celebrini’s play, acknowledged the young star’s talent and wished him well. “He’s a talented guy. I wish him luck, and we’ll see tomorrow, (today)” Ovechkin said. When asked what advice he would give Celebrini, Ovechkin added, “Just be yourself, work hard, be smart, and everything’s going to be good.”
