Of course, the table may take many by surprise, as it shows a three-way tie on points. However, thereās a clear explanation as to why Atletico Madrid are third, and itās not the goal differential, as many would assume.
The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 tiebreak rules have a different criteria for the group stage. Head-to-head results go first. Atletico lost to PSG on Matchday 1 before beating Botafogo on Matchday 3. Meanwhile, the Ligue 1 giants were shocked by the CONMEBOL Libertadores winners on Matchday 2. Therefore, the second criteria came into place.

In this case, the goal differential in head-to-head games between tied teams didnāt help the Spanish side. Atletico Madrid were beaten 4-0 by PSG on Matchday 1, whereas Botafogo lost only 1-0 to the Colchonero on Monday. The French giants, who are the reigning UEFA Champions League winners by the way, also conceded only one goal in their loss to the Brazilian club. Consequently, the three-way tie ultimately saw Atletico go home.
