The long 2020-2021 season is about to end and the La Liga title is up for grabs. Atletico Madrid have been ruling the standings throughout the whole term and find themselves close to securing the title. However, Real Madrid are still alive and we'll have a dramatic season finale this weekend.

The Colchoneros have successfully held onto the first seed for a long time, but some shocking blows prevented them from increasing the gap with their competitors and the trophy is still on the line. With one remaining game, though, Diego Simeone's side depends on itself to be crowned.

Meanwhile, the Merengues run from behind but they don't lose hope. Zinedine Zidane's squad has had a difficult campaign with many injured players and continuous Covid-19 positive results, but they managed to land at the final round with chances of claiming the title. But what would happen if these two rivals finished the table tied on points? Let's find out here.

La Liga tie-breaker in case Real Madrid and Atletico end up level

Unlike many other European leagues, the Spanish first division has a particular way of deciding a season winner if there are two or more teams that finish with the same amount of points atop the table. The first way to do it is through head-to-head points.

Therefore, in case Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid finish tied on points, the Merengues would become La Liga champions because of their results against the Colchoneros this season. Zidane's boys have won and drawn with Simeone's team, meaning they have the advantage in the head-to-head.

However, for that to happen, Atletico would have to tie with Valladolid, who are fighting for survival, and Real Madrid must beat Villarreal at Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano. Ahead of Matchday 38, this is how both sides stand at the table:
