“The first time I saw Timmy, I was like, man, I was kind of impressed,” <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/tony-parker">Parker</a> admitted in a January 2025 interview on the Knuckleheads podcast. “Obviously, I knew he was a superstar—multiple All-Star, MVP of the All-Star Game—I knew he was the franchise, basically. So, I knew that if I wanted to have a chance to be the point guard of that team, I had to earn Tim’s respect.“



Tony arrived in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-antonio-spurs">San Antonio</a> after being selected with the 28th overall pick in the 2001 Draft. That’s surprising considering Parker made an immediate impact on the team. In fact, during his rookie season he played in 77 of 82 games and started in 72 of them. That showed how much head coach Gregg Popovich valued him from the start—but Duncan held a higher standard.

“It’s not until I played great against GP (Gary Payton) in the playoffs that he finally talked to me,” recalled the French star. He was referring to the first-round series of the 2001–02 Western Conference playoffs, when the Spurs defeated the Seattle SuperSonics 3–2. In that series, Parker started all five games and averaged 29.5 minutes per game, putting up 17.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists.



According to Tony, that was the turning point in how Duncan viewed him. “He was like, ‘Man, if he can play good against Gary Payton, I think we have something,’” the guard speculated. “But I didn’t back down. Mentally I was ready, my dad did a great job to prepare me and I was ready for my rookie season and my first year with the Spurs, Timmy won MVP of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nba">NBA</a>.”



That year, the Spurs were eliminated in the semifinals by the Los Angeles Lakers, but it laid the groundwork for the following season. <h2>A new era for San Antonio Spurs</h2>



Parker believes Wembanyama is poised to lead the Spurs into a new era, following in the footsteps of previous legendary big men. “I think we’re very lucky, and we should appreciate that in San Antonio. Like—after David Robinson, Tim Duncan, and now Victor—it’s crazy. The tradition of big men with the Spurs—and I hope he’s going to bring us a lot of championships,” Tony said.



Parker fondly recalled Robinson’s impact on the Spurs, noting the success the franchise enjoyed in the late ’90s and early 2000s with titles in 1999 and 2003. Duncan, who came up while David was still playing, continued the winning legacy after Robinson’s retirement. Now, with Duncan gone since 2016, the responsibility is shifting to Wembanyama.



“You know, we’ve been losing the last five, six seasons since the ‘Big Three’ (Duncan, Parker and Manu Ginobili) left,” the former guard reflected. “And so, I hope he can bring back the Spurs —You know, winning, in the winning ways — And try to contend for championships.”



<h2>Parker’s hopes for France</h2>



Parker’s confidence in Wembanyama extends beyond the Spurs, as he also has high hopes for the future of French basketball. “For Victor and for France, it was already nice to play in the Olympic finals to get a silver medal,” he said. “When I see the new generation like Victor and all the players who were at that team, I think we can be very proud as French people.”

“I have news from Pop. He was here this summer during the Olympics and was excited to return,” he said.

<h2>Support for Popovich’s recovery</h2>



Tony Parker wasn’t the only one to speak about Gregg Popovich’s recovery in recent days. San Antonio Spurs CEO R.C. Buford also provided an optimistic update on the coach’s health: “He’s been improving every week,” the CEO assured, according to journalist Maxime Aubin.



Despite the positive progress, Buford remained cautious about Popovich’s return date, adding: “We don’t know when he will be back, but he will be at some point.” This statement solidified the belief that the 75-year-old coach will eventually resume his duties, with interim head coach Mitch Johnson filling in during Popovich’s absence.

<h2>Kobe Bryant reveals how he contributed to Tony Parker’s development in the NBA</h2>
Big NBA names like Tim Duncan, Gregg Popovich appear in the documentary but Kobe’s presence had something special. The <a href="https://us.bolavip.com/los-angeles-lakers-t101482" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Los Angeles Lakers</a> legend talked about Parker’s early days in the NBA and how Kobe was always trying to get him out of the game.
“I remember games where Tony had a really, really short leash. He makes one mistake, Pop’s gonna pull him out of the game. So I would tell Tony, ‘you know what I’m gonna trap you cause. If you dribble the ball off your foot, you turn the ball over and you are out of the game.’… I think that kind of pressure and environment helped Tony develop and play in those pressure situations. I think it was the 2003 series. In 2003 I think that’s when things clicked in for him and he became very, very difficult for us to handle him. I think his game became well-rounded. I think he had a pretty good handle, the one offensively Pop wanted from him.”

Parker was a complete unknown when he entered the league in the 2001 NBA draft. <a href="https://us.bolavip.com/san-antonio-spurs-t100707" target="_blank" rel="noopener">San Antonio Spurs</a> picked the French player with the 21st overall pick not knowing what to expect from him. What followed was a terrific career for the Frenchman, who won four NBA championships with San Antonio in 17 years with the franchise.

He played in many showdowns against the Lakers and Kobe, sometimes winning, sometimes losing. The relationship between Bryant and Parker was really good and they were always pushing each other to improve their level.
