Some of the NBA’s most talented players have struggled to secure a championship despite their undeniable impact on the game. James Harden, a star for the Los Angeles Clippers, is one of those players who often finds himself under scrutiny—especially regarding his work ethic.
In an exclusive interview with Haynes Briefs, Harden spoke candidly about the criticisms he faces. He emphasized that reaching an elite level in the NBA requires relentless effort, and that’s something he’s never shied away from.
“You don’t get to this level of elite basketball—statistically and everything—without putting the work in,” Harden explained. “It’s not even something you can think about doing without a crazy work ethic. So it doesn’t bother me”.
However, Harden admitted that the negativity takes a toll on those close to him. “But it does bother the people around me—my friends, family, teammates. They hear the negativity, and they should be bothered, because they see how hard I work,” he added.
Harden also expressed confidence that perceptions will shift in time. “Sixteen years in—still an All-Star, still All-NBA. They should feel proud. I think sooner or later people will understand and recognize how hard I worked and what I’ve accomplished,” Harden continued. “So for now—just let them keep talking. Hopefully the narrative changes sooner or later”.
Harden reflects on the Clippers’ playoff opportunity
The Clippers are on the brink of securing a playoff spot, facing the Warriors in a high-stakes regular-season finale. The winner will lock in their place in the postseason.
“We’ve got a real chance to be a top 4-5 seed in the West and make a strong push in the postseason,” Harden remarked after the Clippers’ win against the Rockets.
Harden also credited his teammates for inspiring him to elevate his game, particularly with their competitive energy. “They’ve impacted me in a positive way. They’ve made me lock in on both ends of the floor, and really just instilled that competitive mindset in me to want to do whatever it takes to win. And that’s the beauty of being part of a team,” Harden added.
