Since Luka Doncic’s arrival in the Los Angeles Lakers, the team have formed a new “Big Three” featuring the Slovenian superstar, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves. While James and Doncic were already well-established as elite playmakers, Reaves’ breakout season has cemented them as one of the most dynamic trios in the league. Recently, LeBron shared why their on-court connection has been so effective.

Since Doncic joined the roster, the Lakers have taken their game to another level, climbing to fourth place in the Western Conference with a 46-29 record—firmly in contention for a playoff spot. For James, securing that postseason berth remains Lakers’ primary goal this NBA season.

However, he also pointed out why his partnership with Doncic and Reaves has worked so well. “I think the reason I’m able to thrive with both Luka and Austin is because of the way we complement each other,” James said on the first episode of his podcast “Mind the Game” with Steve Nash.

LeBron first highlighted what makes Doncic such an ideal teammate. “With Luka, his vision and his ability to make the game easier for others is something I’ve always appreciated. Luka doesn’t just see the game in a way that makes his own play easier, but he makes everyone around him better,” James explained. “That’s a huge thing for me. I can focus on getting to my spots, and I don’t have to force things. I trust that Luka is going to put me in a position to succeed, and he does that night in and night out“.

He then broke down what makes Reaves such an important piece of the puzzle. “As for Austin, his growth has been incredible. What people don’t realize about Austin is how much work he’s put in to get better, and it’s showing,” James continued. “His ability to play off the ball, move without it, and just read the defense has been huge. I can play off of him just as much as he plays off me. We have a natural connection that makes the game easier for both of us”.

How the trio elevates the Lakers

Beyond individual skill sets, James emphasized how having both Doncic and Reaves on the floor creates more opportunities for the entire team. “Now, when I’m on the floor with both of them, I feel like there’s so much room to operate. Luka’s gravity alone opens up so many options for all of us,” James noted. “The defense is forced to react to his playmaking, and then Austin can space the floor, which keeps things balanced.”.

Having Reaves as a reliable outlet also makes decision-making easier for James. “When I’m driving, I know that I have the option to kick it to Austin, and he’s going to make the right play, whether it’s hitting an open shot or making a quick decision. It’s just a natural flow when we’re all on the court together,” he added.

The Lakers’ ‘Big Three’ making NBA history

The Lakers’ trio has already showcased its full potential, particularly in their statement win over the Memphis Grizzlies. Not only did they lead the team to victory, but they also etched their names into the NBA history books.

After combining for 85 points, 21 rebounds, and 23 assists, they became the first trio in NBA history to each record 25+ points, 5+ rebounds, 5+ assists, and 2+ made three-pointers in the same game.

Reaves led all scorers with 31 points, along with seven rebounds and eight assists. Doncic followed with 29 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists, while James added 25 points, six rebounds, and eight assists.
