49ers announce the signing of Nate Sudfeld for the 2025 NFL season
A new quarterback is joining the competition to be Brock Purdy’s backup in 2025. Nate Sudfeld has agreed to terms with the 49ers and will join their efforts for the upcoming campaign.
In recent years, Purdy has battled health issues, but his starting job is completely secure. However, San Francisco appears uncertain about who will serve as his primary backup this season.
This offseason, the Niners acquired Mac Jones, who was expected to take on the backup role. Nevertheless, the former first-round pick has not proven to be a reliable option, which is where Sudfeld enters the conversation.
Sudfeld, 31, entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick in 2016 with Washington. He has been a backup for most of his career, appearing in just six games with 25 completions for 188 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
Sudfeld was part of the Philadelphia Eagles roster when they defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. He is set to compete with Mac Jones, although the former Jaguars quarterback remains the frontrunner for the backup role.
