The current NFL landscape is marked by both the quantity and quality of elite talent across the league. Mike Evans stands out as a true leader at his position, often regarded as one of the top wide receivers based on his impressive statistics. However, the Buccaneers star himself believes there’s someone who could be considered better than him — and it’s neither A.J. Brown nor Garrett Wilson.
Evans’ attention turned toward the AFC North — specifically, the Cincinnati Bengals. The player he referred to is none other than Ja’Marr Chase, a key weapon in Joe Burrow’s offense. Without a doubt, Chase is a generational talent when it comes to today’s wide receivers.
“Ja’Marr Chase,” Evans said after being asked by Fox Sports writer Greg Auman who he believes is currently better than him. “He’s a guy where if you said he was better than me–I don’t think anybody’s better than me, but if you said him, I would understand. So Ja’Marr, Justin Jefferson, Nico Collins, Drake London.”
While the Bucs star acknowledged that Chase might be the only receiver who could surpass him in terms of talent, he didn’t shy away from praising other top-tier wideouts like Jefferson, Collins, and even London.
Evans reflects on the NFL’s top receivers
The fact that Mike Evans ranked Ja’Marr Chase above other top receivers currently playing in the NFL doesn’t mean he doesn’t recognize other elite talents — such as Houston Texans star Nico Collins.
“He’s kind of like a mix of me and Julio Jones. He’s 6-4, 6-5, but he can run up and catch like Julio and he has muscles like Julio. He has the length like me. I love Nico’s game,” he said.
He also made sure not to overlook the impressive talent of Drake London, one of the most impactful players on the Atlanta Falcons roster.
“I’ve known Drake since he was in high school. (Former Bucs receivers coach) Andrew Hayes-Stoker was recruiting him (while at Illinois) and he asked me to reach out to him. I looked him up a little bit and was like, ‘Man, this dude can hoop, and he can play football.’ So he was similar to me, and I’ve always been a fan of his game. We still talk sometimes, and we’ve swapped jerseys a few times.“
