Ben Roethlisberger discussed on his podcast Footbahlin the decision by Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers to pass on Shedeur Sanders in the first round of the 2025 Draft. With Aaron Rodgers potentially joining the team, Big Ben believes Derrick Harmon was the right choice.
“Derrick Harmon, the defensive tackle, I think this is a great pick. That’s the spot. I know they talked about quarterback and there was a lot of Shedeur Sanders talk, but, that wasn’t the most dire need. I think that would have been a reach in the first round (going for a quarterback).”
The Steelers are trying to become Super Bowl contenders again, but the quarterback position is clearly much weaker compared to other teams like the Chiefs, Bills, or Ravens. That’s where Rodgers would be the key factor.
Who did Steelers pick in 2025 Draft?
In the 2025 Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers picked Derrick Harmon (DT), Kaleb Johnson (RB), Jack Sawyer (EDGE), Yahya Black (DT), Will Howard (QB), Carson Bruener (LB), and Donte Kent (CB). As Ben Roethlisberger mentioned, the message is clear: Pittsburgh needs to regain physicality in the trenches.
“I think that this draft feels like: ‘We maybe haven’t been physical stopping the run. Let’s address that.’ Defensive tackle first, edge rusher, nose tackle. We went heavy defense. Let’s stop the run. Let’s show physicality.”
