NFL News: Caleb Williams throws shade at former Bears coach for poor game management

The tenure of Matt Eberflus with the Chicago Bears was very disappointing. After parting ways with him, Caleb Williams, the star quarterback of the team, has thrown major shade at Eberflus over his poor coaching skills.

Last year, the Chicago Bears used their first-overall pick in the NFL Draft to select Caleb Williams. He was widely regarded as the best prospect in his class after an outstanding college career with the USC Trojans.

However, a player can’t do it all by himself. While Williams’ skills are undeniable, there were many doubts surrounding the coaching staff, who certainly didn’t meet expectations and failed to bring out the best in him during his rookie season.

For many football analysts, Caleb Williams has the potential to become a superstar in the near future. His talent is clear, but the Bears must support him with a strong roster and a competent coaching staff.

While Chicago now has several key players backing Williams, the coaching staff he had last year was far below the level of the roster. The quarterback is well aware of that and has now decided to address the team’s recent coaching struggles.

Matt Eberflus took over as the Bears’ head coach in 2022 after the team moved on from Matt Nagy. He was tasked with turning Caleb Williams into a superstar but failed to do so, raising even more doubts about the former No. 1 overall pick’s development.

The Bears experienced ups and downs under Eberflus, but their Week 8 defeat last year was the breaking point. They suffered a crushing Hail Mary loss to the Commanders, and Caleb Williams has since criticized Eberflus for not being the leader they needed at the time.

“How [Eberflus] handled it at that time, for that game, was, I think, one of the things that throughout the locker room people talked about and were annoyed by,” Williams told Esquire, via the Chicago Sun-Times.

During the 2024 NFL season, the Bears parted ways with Matt Eberflus following a string of disappointing results. The team appointed Thomas Brown as interim head coach to close out the campaign.

This offseason, the Bears hired Ben Johnson as their new head coach. Formerly the offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions, Johnson is expected to help Caleb Williams thrive with his quarterback-friendly system.
