The Las Vegas Raiders are looking to move on from a forgettable 2024 NFL season and have already gotten to work, fueled by the vision of minority owner Tom Brady. In recent hours, quarterback Geno Smith was given a potential key weapon for head coach Pete Carroll’s team.
There’s still a long way to go before the new season kicks off, but the Raiders clearly want to raise the bar and perform better this year. Sitting at the bottom of the division is not a pleasant memory for the Las Vegas franchise. With Carroll now in charge and Brady involved, the goal is to refresh the image of a team looking to give real weight to its renewed ambitions.
Along those lines, Smith arrived from the Seattle Seahawks to reunite with a familiar face in Carroll. The Raiders are not only hopeful that this reunion will pay off on the field, but they’ve also made additional moves in the days following the draft to keep refining their offense.
A new potential key weapon for Smith and the Raiders
The potential key weapon for Geno Smith joining the Raiders is none other than wide receiver Tommy Mellott, who was selected by the franchise in the sixth round of the NFL Draft. Mellott stands out for his versatility, having also played quarterback at Montana State University.
The Raiders announced Mellott as a wide receiver, making him a potential key weapon for Smith and the eighth of the team’s eleven draft picks to secure his rookie deal. At the same time, three drafted players have yet to sign their contracts: second-round wide receiver Jack Bech, third-round cornerback Darien Porter, and fourth-round wide receiver Dont’e Thornton Jr.
A new offense for the Raiders
In addition to the arrival of Smith, Las Vegas has made key signings to shake things up on offense. Veteran running back Raheem Mostert signed a one-year deal worth $2.1 million. Guard Alex Cappa also joined the team on a two-year, $11.2 million contract.
