14 seasons later, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/seattle-seahawks">Seattle Seahawks</a> head into an offseason without <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/pete-carroll">Pete Carroll</a> as head coach. The franchise’s decision to move on from the man who led them to their lone Super Bowl success in 2014 has been tough, and now his future in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nfl">NFL</a> raises many questions.



“I don’t know that,” Carroll said on Seattle Sports 710 when asked if he sees himself coaching in the future, via Brady Henderson of ESPN. “I’ve got plenty of energy for it and thought and willingness, but I can’t imagine there’s a place, the right one. I don’t know. I’m open to everything, but I’m not holding my breath on that.“



Carroll, 72, said right after the 2023 season finale he expected to come back for the 2024 season. Only a few days later, the Seahawks announced they were removing Carroll as head coach, giving him a new role as an advisor. However, many wonder whether Carroll will look for a coaching job elsewhere.



“There’s a lot of world out here that I’m excited about challenging and going after. So if that happens, it happens. We’ll see. I really don’t know what to tell you about that yet.”

That leaves <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/andy-reid">Andy Reid</a> as the oldest coach still active in the league, but that doesn’t mean he’s planning to step away anytime soon.



“I haven’t even thought about that. I’m thinking about one thing,” Reid said when asked if he intends to continue being the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs next season, via ProFootballTalk. “I figured that would come up when you guys were asking these questions because I’m old — but, not that old.”



Reid, 65, will turn 66 in March. Only Belichick (71) and Carroll (72) are older than him among active coaches in 2023, so if they don’t find another team for 2024, Reid would find himself atop the list — John Harbaugh, 61, would be in second place.

Many predicted the veteran quarterback to thrive in the Mile High City, but things haven’t gone as expected so far.
Wilson has thrown for 1,694 yards, with six touchdowns and four interceptions in seven starts this season, with one of the lowest QBRs in the league (36.0, 28th). The Broncos, meanwhile, are third in the AFC West at 3-5.

It’s safe to say Smith is one of the biggest surprises this season, making a strong case for the Comeback Player of the Year award. Carroll is particularly delighted with Smith’s communication with the offensive coordinator and his use of a wristband to help calling plays – something Carroll said that faced “resistance” in previous years.
“He’s getting everything he can get out of Shane [Waldren],” Carroll told 710 ESPN Seattle, via CBS Sports. “That’s a really important part of it. Shane helps him all the way through to the 15-second point (when communication from the sideline stops). … They’re just communicating to get it done and there’s this conversation that goes on, so they work it out, and Geno (is) taking advantage of all of that.
“If you notice, Geno’s going off the wristband, and that’s a big help. It’s smoothed things out, sped things up, cleaned things up. And that’s part of it, too. We never did that before. There was resistance to that, so we didn’t do that before.“
Though Carroll didn’t mention who exactly opposed to the idea, it’s hard not to imagine this somehow implicates Wilson. Since he left, things haven’t been completely <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/nfl-news-pete-carroll-explains-what-it-means-to-beat-russell-wilsons-broncos-20220914-0025.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">friendly</a> between the signal-caller and his former team.

“I don’t know exactly what he said. Won a lot of games there without one on my wrist. I didn’t know winning or losing mattered whether you wore a wristband or not,” Wilson replied when asked about Carroll’s comments, via Mike Klis of KUSA.
Whether Carroll actually took a dig at Wilson is still debatable, as he never said it directly. Either way, it’s safe to say that neither Carroll nor Wilson seem to have any regrets about the breakup.

Maybe as much as anything is representing the guys that have played before. It meant a lot to those guys. I was so thrilled to be able to hug those guys up and see them and look them in the eye.
“You figure that out,” Carroll said when asked why the win was so important for the former players who attended the game. “It was really meaningful and they really wanted it and I knew we were playing for a lot more than just the regular stuff. We have a real connection with the history. . . . They feel it and they love the fact that they played here and they love seeing us do well. On this night, they realized there was a big opportunity and a big statement to be made. The game isn’t about an individual player here or there. It’s about team. This is the ultimate team sport and it’s been stated so many times before. It takes everybody.
“Sometimes when so much focus goes, it just rubs guys wrong I guess, or whatever. But I’m thrilled that we won that game. It was significant for a lot of reasons beyond just it’s the first game of the year and all that.”
Carroll didn’t detail which were those reasons, but maybe he didn’t need to – there was a lot of history behind this game.This was a special opportunity for him to prove a point, and his team seized it.

“We really were focused in on Russ’ play with our pass rush. That’s really the way to play him. You can move him and you can make him go,” Carroll said, via SeattleSports.com. “I think he moved 10 times and he completed two passes on the times we moved him out of the pocket and moved him around like we were trying to. It’s a hard dynamic to have. There’s so many factors in there, but we’re trying to push him in directions.
“When he moves to his left, it’s hard for him numbers-wise and all that, so we just we were able to do some stuff,” Carroll added. “It wasn’t perfect at all, but it was effective and we felt like we were controlling it. It wasn’t always just getting clean to get the sack, it was to try and make him go where we wanted him to go, and guys did a good job.”
When you look at Wilson’s stats, it’s not like he had a bad game or anything like that. He threw for 340 yards, but only had one touchdown and completed 29 of 42 passes. But inthe end, he wasn’t comfortable enough to give his team the win.

“That could happen. Yeah, that could happen,” Carroll said. “We’ve got it worked out where we are figuring out playing time right now. Drew needs to play a lot of football because he missed a game [due to COVID]. So that’s the main thing to get done this weekend. (…) This game is really important because it’s kind of the make-up deal. I’m going to make sure to take care of business on that.”
“I’m wide open for whatever happens,” Carroll added. “Geno has been the guy in the lead position the whole time. I’ve protected that thought throughout and he’s done a really nice job. He’s been very consistent. We’ll just see what happens. There’s two more weeks of practice too after this. With a timeline, I had a set thought of what we would do with the timeline but that got disrupted. We’re going to use all the time we need. (…) These guys are so even right now.”

Not to disrespect Smith or Lock, but neither of them is a true starting-caliber QB, so why keep stalling this decision? Why not go face-front and tank, trade for another QB, or at least give the younger guy a shot to prove himself?
