The Miami Dolphins missed a key weapon during their mandatory minicamps. However, it seems that Tua Tagovailoa might actually have one of his most productive teammates back in the mix for the 2025 NFL season.

We’re talking about tight end Jonnu Smith. After a massive season where he racked up 884 yards and 8 touchdowns, Smith is looking for an extension. After all, he’s just had the best season of his career.

At first, it seemed like the former Falcon was definitely going to play elsewhere. However, Miami’s head coach Mike McDaniel, stated that the team’s plans are to not trade Smith. This throws out the question: why haven’t they signed him to a new contract?

Smith’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said on WSVN that the relationship between the two sides is “still fluid.” While nothing has been resolved, Rosenhaus said “it’s still an ongoing situation.”

Jonnu Smith was a pleasant surprise for the Dolphins

Smith has played in the NFL for 8 seasons. At 29 years old, most thought his best days were behind him. It turned out that all he needed to exploit from a decent TE to a top player in his position was Mike McDaniel. Miami’s HC is known to be one of the most creative offensive minds in the league.

Jonnu Smith #9 of the Miami Dolphins takes the field before playing the Arizona Cardinals at Hard Rock Stadium on October 27, 2024 in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Due to his production, Smith was selected to the Pro-Bowl and was the second-best receiver on the team just behind Tyreek Hill. He also led the team in touchdowns.

Where will Smith play then?

It was rumored that the Steelers were heavily interested on Smith’s services. However, nothing came to fruition. With Miami’s mandatory minicamps already a thing of the past, there is time for both sides to either work out a new contract or trade Smith.

While the Dolphins do have plenty of talented players, losing Smith would mean a lot. After all, he was arguably their best offensive player. If he leaves, Tua Tagovailoa will need a new quality tight end to pass the ball to.
