Building on last season’s performance — and even improving it — will be the first major challenge for the Jayden Daniels-led Washington Commanders. Fortunately for the quarterback, he won’t just have Zach Ertz at his disposal; the team also secured the addition of Deebo Samuel to give him another dynamic offensive weapon.
After showing his first moves ahead of a new season in his career, many questioned the physical condition of the former San Francisco 49ers star, who didn’t appear as explosive as fans have come to expect.
That’s why tight end Zach Ertz came to his defense, praising his new teammate for the hard work he’s put in this offseason. The former Eagles standout expressed full confidence that Samuel’s contribution will be key to what lies ahead for the team.
“First and foremost, the guy loves the work,” Ertz said. “He was grinding every day in the off-season. I’ve been with him. I’ve seen him train in the off-season so far this summer. He’s a guy that is a difference maker with the ball in his hands. Is he a running back? Is he a receiver? Doesn’t really matter at the end of the day. The guy’s a playmaker.”
New faces in the Commanders’ offense
Washington hasn’t just added key reinforcements to its roster through the offseason and the most recent draft — the team has also brought in an important new face to Dan Quinn’s coaching staff.
Kliff Kingsbury has joined the Commanders as the new offensive coordinator, and many are already anticipating a major shift in that department — one that could maximize the talent on the roster.
“Kliff is such a good guy at using people to their skill sets, and Deebo has got a lot of it,” Ertz stated. “It’s going to be exciting for him. It’s going to be exciting for us.”
