NHL News: After Mitch Marner signing, Golden Knights lock in emerging defenseman with $13M extension

Following their blockbuster acquisition of Mitch Marner, the Vegas Golden Knights continue reshaping their roster by investing in their blue line. The NHL team announced a four-year, $13 million contract extension for defenseman Kaedan Korczak, locking in one of their most promising young players through the 2029–30 season. The deal carries a $3.25 million annual cap hit, beginning in 2026–27.

The 23-year-old defenseman took a notable step forward during the 2024–25 campaign. Korczak appeared in 40 NHL games, recording 10 assists and a plus-15 rating, one of the best on Vegas’ defensive corps. The team views him as a key piece in their future blue line, especially amid changes such as the absence of veteran Alex Pietrangelo, who stepped away for health reasons.

Vegas has identified the right side of its defense as an area of need following the trade of Nicolas Hague and Pietrangelo’s departure from the active lineup. Korczak, a right-handed, 6-foot-4 blueliner, has already shown the defensive awareness, skating ability, and physical presence to take on a top-four role moving forward.

In addition to his regular-season contributions, Korczak gained valuable experience during the team’s 2025 Stanley Cup Playoff run, appearing in key second-round games. His performance in high-pressure situations solidified management’s confidence in his readiness to take on expanded responsibilities.

A strategic move to maintain depth and stability

This extension not only rewards Korczak’s development but also provides the Golden Knights with cost-controlled depth. With the salary cap a constant consideration, a $3.25M AAV for a young defenseman with top-four potential aligns with Vegas’ model of blending emerging talent with veteran leadership.

Korczak joins a defense group that still includes Shea Theodore, Brayden McNabb, and other experienced blueliners, providing a mix of stability and upward potential. The NHL team is expected to remain active in discussions to bolster its depth but clearly sees Korczak as a foundational piece.
