As Auston Matthews‘ Toronto Maple Leafs turn the page following Mitch Marner’s high-profile exit, Matthew Knies is cementing his place in the team’s future. The 22-year-old forward has signed a six-year, $46.5 million contract, bypassing restricted free agency and putting any talk of an offer sheet to rest before July 1.
The timing of the deal wasn’t coincidental. On a Zoom call Tuesday, Knies shared that it was important for him to make a long-term commitment to the team before the free agency period began—sending a message of loyalty to both the organization and his teammates.
“I wanted to get it done before free agency and help (Treliving) out as much as possible,” Knies said. “A (shorter) bridge deal wasn’t in my head, I wanted longer term.”
Why Matthew Knies committed to Toronto for the long term
Knies’ decision was influenced by more than just hockey logistics. He cited the leadership and mentorship of John Tavares as a key factor in his desire to stay. The veteran center, who recently signed a four-year, $17.55 million extension himself, has served as both an on-ice role model and a personal guide for the young winger.
“That means a lot that he believes in the program and wants to stay,” Knies said. “I’ve learned a ton from that guy and look forward to four more years soaking up all that knowledge.”

Knies stayed with Tavares when he first joined the Maple Leafs, and the experience left a lasting impact. His extension now aligns with a new era for the team—one in which Knies aims to play a central role, alongside franchise cornerstone Auston Matthews.
Belief in the culture and the city
Knies’ comments also reflect his growing sense of belonging in Toronto, a city he now calls home both personally and professionally. He praised the organization’s winning culture and the consistent playoff appearances, suggesting that his development is tied closely to what the Leafs are building.
“In my trajectory as a player, this was the sweet spot for both of us,” Knies said. “We have a great group of unbelievable players, we’re continually making the playoffs and making pushes. That was a huge part of wanting to return. The culture and the city, I just love it all.”

His commitment stands in contrast to Marner’s departure, but it also speaks volumes about the Maple Leafs’ efforts to build a younger, more cohesive core under GM Brad Treliving and coach Craig Berube.
