Fluminense secured an important 2-1 victory over Flamengo in a new edition of the Rio de Janeiro derby at the Maracana Stadium for Matchday 34 of the 2025 Brasileirao Serie A.
Flamengo entered the match as the better side, sitting first in the league table. However, context often plays no role in derbies, as these are special contests, and Fluminense proved that on the field.
During the first half, Fluminense took the initiative, dominating play and stifling their rivals. Their aggressive play was rewarded in the 24th minute with a spectacular goal from Luciano Acosta that put their team ahead.
Zubeldía’s team capitalized on the momentum the goal created, and following a major error by Agustin Rossi, Kevin Serna seized the opportunity to double the lead before halftime.
In the second half, Flamengo tried everything to equalize the game but Fluminense did a great defensive job to avoid that. With five minutes left, Flamengo were awarded a penalty that Jorginho converted for a goal, which only served to close the gap on the scoreboard.
With this triumph, Fluminense climbed to sixth place, putting them firmly within the qualification spots for the Copa Libertadores playoffs. Flamengo, meanwhile, squandered a golden chance to extend their lead over Palmeiras, who have now closed the gap and sit just two points behind the leaders.
