Mexico will aim to win back-to-back titles on Sunday, August 1s when they face USA in the Gold Cup 2021 grand final. El Tri will be defending their crown against the same rival they defeated in the last edition in 2019 to win the title.
El Tricolor want to expand their supremacy in the official national competition of North America, Central America and the Caribbean. While the Concacaf tournament has been played since 1963, it was reformatted in 1991 to the competition it is today.
Since the change of format, the Gold Cup is considered the main tournament of the region so the championship count was reestablished. However, Concacaf still recognizes the champions of the old Concacaf Championships. So, how many times have El Tri reached the final of this tournament?
Gold Cup 2021: Mexico’s finals in the tournament
Mexico are the Concacaf Gold Cup most winning side with eight trophies so far. They have been in the final nine times since 1991. Their only loss was in the 2007 edition against the United States, when the US won 2-1 with goals from Landon Donovan and Benny Feilhaber.
Despite that, Mexico is the most effective side in the finals. Also, Mexico won seven of those finals against the United States and the other against Jamaica. If they win on Sunday, it will be the third time in history that they have won back-to-back titles.
The last time they won two consecutive Gold Cup titles was when they lifted the trophy in the 2009 and 2011 edition. Before that, they won three titles straight in 1993, 1996 and 1998. Will they expand their domination in the regional tournament?
