With the 2021/22 Serie A season looming around, AS Roma might have to find a new No. 9 on time. Veteran striker Edin Dzeko is reportedly close to joining reigning champions Inter Milan as Romelu Lukaku would return to Chelsea. I Giallorrossi, however, would already see in a PSG star a possible replacement, with Jose Mourinho apparently eager to sign him.
It may have come with short notice for the Portuguese boss as the league kick-off is set for Saturday, August 21, but Roma still have time to land Dzeko’s replacement, should the Bosnian ends up moving to the Nerazzurri.
Despite losing an important player for the club, this might be a great opportunity for Mourinho’s Roma to givean upgrade to their attack. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, The Special One has a principal target to take over for Dzeko.
Edin Dzeko packing his bags to join Inter Milan
The 35-year-old seems to be just one step away from moving to the 2020/21 Serie A winners. Journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that Edin Dzeko has already agreed on a contract until 2023 with Inter Milan, who see in him Lukaku’s replacement.
The Belgian superstar would return to Chelsea for this season and the Nerazzurri have moved fast to fill his vacancy. Romano has added that Dzeko and Inter are waiting for Roma to find a new striker before completing the move.
AS Roma have PSG star on their sights
Jose Mourinho seems to have already identified his principal candidate to be Roma’s No. 9. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he wants to bring in PSG’s Mauro Icardi, who has struggled to perform at his best for the French club.
The Argentine striker, on the other hand, had previously shone at Serie A with Inter. With the Lionel Messi saga possibly changing things in Paris Saint-Germain, Icardi might find it difficult to have a pivotalrole from now on. His market value, according to Transfermarkt, is $44 million and he is still under contract until 2024,so Roma would have to make a financial effort.
Icardi has scored in PSG’s 2-1 win over Troyes on Matchday 1 of 2021/22 Ligue 1 and played the fullgame. Last season, he mostly played as a starter after missing several games through injury, but was benched in the first leg of the Champions League semis against Manchester City and only played 62′ in the second leg. Besides, Messi’s arrival could change Icardi’s situation andMourinho’s interest could be very tempting.
