Amid Georgia's QB uncertainty, Kirby Smart drops stern statement on Nico Iamaleava entering the transfer portal

The news coming out of the Tennessee Volunteers, regarding quarterback Nico Iamaleava's departure from the program, may have major repercussions for the Georgia Bulldogs, after Kirby Smart voiced a firm message on the situation.

As the Georgia Bulldogs continue their search for a starting quarterback during spring camp, the news of Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Nico Iamaleava entering the NCAA transfer portal could change the entire landscape for Kirby Smart and the Dawgs.

Endorsements, NIL deals, and the transfer portal have completely shifted the playing field in college football, and programs are quickly learning that they’ve embarked on a new adventure — one where they live by the sword and die by the sword.

The Dawgs started off the year learning their signal caller, Carson Beck, who was expected to enter the NFL Draft, was instead making use of the portal, transferring to the Miami Hurricanes. Smart and Georgia were left with two big options for their starting job under center: Gunner Stockton or Ryan Puglisi.

However, that may have changed after Iamaleava announced he’ll enter the transfer portal, which opens on April 16. The Vols’ QB is now on the move, and Smart could certainly make great use of such talent — though his recent statement poured cold water on any hype.

I worry about my house, and I try to control what goes on in my house. I can’t worry about everyone else’s house,” Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart stated, via On3. “So the climate is different. But again, I’m focused on the kids that we’ve got that want to be here. I don’t know enough about that situation to fairly comment on it”

Moving on

While the news of Iamaleava and Tennessee’s fallout came unexpectedly, the locker room in Knoxville has made it clear they’re staying focused on their end goal for the upcoming season.

Didn’t skip a beat. Ready to roll. Excited for what’s coming,” Volunteers tight end Miles Kitselman stated about Iamaleava’s departure. “I have been a part of some really talented teams that haven’t won a whole lot because there were individuals on those teams.”

Bad blood

Needless to say, the players in Knoxville aren’t happy about Iamaleava’s decision, which could set up a big meeting if the 20-year-old commits to an SEC team and faces Tennessee this season.

Beware if Iamaleava enrolls at Georgia. Smart and the Dawgs are scheduled to visit Neyland Stadium on September 13 in what’s already expected to be a huge clash in the league. If the former Volunteers signal-caller comes out of the away tunnel, it would elevate the matchup into an even bigger marquee showdown.
