Nico Iamaleava undoubtedly delivered the biggest headline of the day in NCAAF after announcing his departure from the Tennessee Volunteers and his decision to explore new opportunities via the Transfer Portal. Head coach Josh Heupel, who guided Iamaleava through the team’s most recent Playoff run, shared his thoughts on the situation.

His absence from recent practices may have hinted at what ultimately unfolded regarding Iamaleava’s future in college football. After the quarterback officially announced his departure, Josh Heupel avoided any sign of reproach and instead focused all his energy on what lies ahead — no matter who is under center.

“Man, listen, it’s the state of college football,” Heupel told Brent Hubbs on The Vol Network radio broadcast. “At the end of the day, no one is ever bigger than the program. That includes me, too. We’ve got an opportunity. We’ve got a bunch of guys that will give their all for Tennessee. We move forward. Got a great group. Let’s go compete.”

George MacIntyre emerged as the natural first option to replace Iamaleava in the initial tactical setup led by Coach Heupel. While several weeks remain before the start of the season, MacIntyre’s chances of being the starting quarterback in Week 1 appear to be very real.

While everything coming out of the program suggested a strong relationship between the quarterback and head coach Josh Heupel, both will now go their separate ways. At Tennessee, the focus will shift toward the future, as the staff looks to downplay the impact of this move and build around what’s next.

What will be Nico Iamaleava’s next destination?

While the news is still fresh and no official decisions have been made, early speculation suggests that programs like USC and Oregon could be in the mix for Iamaleava’s services — particularly given his strong ties to the West Coast.
