Rivalry Week is finally upon us in college football. The UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans will go head to head in Week 14 of the 2025 NCAA season. Now, the University of California in Los Angeles has learned the latest on Iamaleava’s injury, as the Bruins gear up for their last game of the campaign. Taking none other than crosstown rivals, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/usc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">USC</a> Trojans, UCLA hopes to end the year with a statement, upset victory at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. On that note, interim head coach Tim Skipper issued a sincere comment on the 21-year-old quarterback.



“Right now, we’re still kind of waiting. [Iamaleava is] doing all his rehab stuff today. We’ll see where he is. I guess the best way to put it right now is he’s day-to-day. That’s where that is with Nico. Nico had some neck spasm stuff happen,” Skipper admitted per On3. “Just kind of got tackled funny. Didn’t calm down enough for him to get back into the game.”

Iamaleava has been in Westwood for roughly six months. Still, he’s been put through the wringer in record time. Much talk has surrounded <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ucla" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCLA</a> as the Tennessee transfer quarterback struggled in transitioning to his new life in Los Angeles. It took a while—and several painful lessons—but the Bruins are starting to reap the fruits of their work.



DeShaun Foster is no longer on University Park. An 0-3 start cost him his seat at the helm of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/penn-state" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Penn State</a>’s football program. With his departure came transfers, along with decommitments from recruits in the classes of 2026 and 2027.



However, those who remained were determined to right the ship before it was too late in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a> campaign. Iamaleava made sure everybody was on the same page as he delivered a bold statement across the locker room. Needless to say, it did the trick as the Bruins put on a show against the No. 7 Nittany Lions.

“There was a lot of outside noise coming into this game,” Iamaleava said during his post-game press conference. “I was preaching to the guys, ‘If y’all don’t want to be here, man, leave.’ I was basically telling them that whoever still believes we’re in this, and that we’ve got games ahead we can win—let’s roll.”

Much has been said about Iamaleava. Many of those can both be true. Fans across the nation still disapprove of his decision to enter the transfer portal over NIL disputes with the Volunteers. However, his time in UCLA hasn’t been entirely as bad as the Bruins’ record indicates.



Iamaleava has struggled, that’s undeniable, but he’s also been left out to dry in several occasions. More times than one, Iamaleava has been asked to play hero ball for the Bruins. As it stands, the sophomore quarterback is the entire offense in the City of Angels.

So far, Iamaleava 954 passing yards, 6 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. Moreover, he’s rushed for 332 yards and 4 touchdowns. No other player on the roster has scored through the ground. The numbers may be good for the Long Beach-native, but they are a recipe for disaster for UCLA. 



<h2>Ranked no more</h2>



Yet another loss against a Big Ten opponent in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NCAA</a> was the tipping point for Penn State in the AP Poll Top 25. Concerns are only growing louder around Drew Allar, James Franklin, and the Nittany Lions’ ability to prevail when the spotlight is brightest.

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ucla">UCLA</a> knew parting ways with its head coach early in the year would only raise more question marks. Still, the Bruins believed it was best to nip the problem in the bud before the season spiraled out of control. It might be too late for that as UCLA is 0-3 before facing a single Big Ten opponent. The college football program in Westwood faces trouble in a new front.



In the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a>, recruiting is almost as important to build winning programs as actually winning games on Saturdays. The Bruins know this, yet it seems they might’ve underestimated the waves their decision would make all across the country. In very short notice, 4-star defensive lineman David Schwerzel, 3-star linebacker Ramzak Fruean, and 3-star interior offensive lineman Cooper Javorsky backpedaled on their commitments to the Bruins.

All three of them are members of the 2026 recruiting class. Their decisions cast doubt on UCLA’s status going into next season. As much as it hurts to admit in Westwood, the current campaign might very well be over.

“I am officially decomitted from UCLA, my recruitment is 100% back open,” Fruean said. Schwerzel voiced a similar comment: “Recruitment 100% back open! Continue to guide me through this process lord.”



Even teenagers in high school are aware of the drama going on in Los Angeles. It won’t be long before actual players on campus decide it might be best to enter the transfer portal and search for a new start in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a>.

To say the 2025 NCAA season so far for UCLA has been disappointing and disheartening would be an understatement. With Iamaleava transferring from Tennessee, Bruins fans expected much better results from the 21-year-old signal caller and his teammates.

While Iamaleava is now eligible to enter the transfer portal and search for a new home in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a>, it might not be the best decision. As the 21-year-old has already transferred in the NCAA, he won’t be able to play this season. However, as he’s played in less than four games, Iamaleava can redshirt and retain a year of college eligibility.

To make matters worse, Jose Aguilar—Joey’s father—chimed in with a blunt comment on the summer drama, finishing with a cold-blooded dagger to remind Iamaleava and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ucla">UCLA</a> that the Vols came out on top.



“We don’t have any problems with Nico,” Jose Aguilar said in an interview with Pete Nakos. “If anything, it’s thank you. Joey is in a great spot. That’s what I would say, thank you. Since arriving in Los Angeles, Iamaleava hasn’t been at his best. It what was a much-needed victory to kickoff Joey Aguilar’s career in Knoxville, and move on from Nico Iamaleava’s drama in the offseason. After the game, the Vols’ starting quarterback spoke on his reception at his new school.



As the Volunteers made their season debut on August 30 against the Orange, it was time for Aguilar to rise to the occasion and help close the open wound left by Iamaleava’s rushed departure. Aguilar did just that, and afterwards spoke on his arrival after <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nico-iamaleava">Iamaleava</a> exited the program.



“Everybody welcomed me in pretty fairly when I got here,” Aguilar said during an appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show. “I gravitated towards Miles Kitselman pretty quick. He was a big part of my transition ,making it easier. He kind of came in, took me in pretty quick, build a connection like that. 



“Chris [Brazzell II], Mike [Matthews], Braylon [Staley], all of them, O-linemen — it made it easy. It felt like I’ve been here for a while, especially with the players and coaches just being so welcoming when I got here. It just felt like it was right.”

The football program in Knoxville didn’t enjoy the calmest of springs and summers this past year. When looking at Aguilar and Iamaleava, it’s impossible not to think about the wild events that led to them being where they currently are. However, Aguilar has no interest listening to the outside noise.



“All the outside noise is just rat poison,” Aguilar told media during the postgame press conference. “We only focus about who’s in the building and the team we’ve got. Aguilar had played the first two seasons of his college football career with the Appalachian State Mountaineers. And even though he planned to transfer to UCLA before Iamaleava changed his plans, he still isn’t letting his new surroundings change his old customs. Thus, he installed a new tradition in Knoxville.



“There was a tradition at App State of just taking my teammates out to eat. So I kind of wanted to bring that here,” Aguilar stated. “Just going out to eat and just having a fun time, getting outside of football, and just trying to build a connection. Learn everybody’s story, and kind of get an understanding of how they got here, what’s their why, and just build a relationship like that.“

Despite the loss, the QB knows there’s still time to improve: “Everything we want is still ahead of us, man. It’s week one. Our whole mindset is shifting to who our opponent is week two and going out there and dominating and executing at a high level like our coaches are putting us in position to do.”

<h2>Coach’s confidence in Nico Iamaleava</h2>



While this may not have been the debut Nico Iamaleava or the Bruins had hoped for at their home facilities, the beauty of Week 1 is that redemption is always just around the corner. Head coach DeShaun Foster believes in his starting quarterback’s talent — and trusts he’ll be able to showcase it sooner rather than later.



“Nico is a competitor. He’s not going to quit. Keeps playing hard, kept motivating the guys around him. We just have to do a better job protecting him and keeping him upright.”



He also praised his team’s attitude despite the loss: “I think the score kind of got us to be one-dimensional at one point. That was tough. I was proud of the way they came out and just kept fighting. There might have been a couple long faces on the sideline, but for the most part, most of those guys were still out there fighting and understanding what you’re putting on film now is actually who you are as a football player.”

The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa" rel="sponsored nofollow">NCAA</a> transfer portal continues to deliver great twists and turns to an otherwise quiet stretch of the year during college football’s offseason. This time around, the UCLA Bruins are in centerstage, once again, as a quarterback in DeShaun Foster’s team has now changed address, staying in the Golden State, nevertheless.



Iamaleava has yet to touch down in Los Angeles, as the transfer process requires him to complete his academic obligations at his previous institution, and he is expected at <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ucla">UCLA</a> during the summer. 



Despite being 2,199 miles away in Knoxville, Iamaleava continues to impact the daily life on campus at UCLA. Quarterbacks in the program have now departed, making way for Nico and his brother Madden Iamaleava. On that note, freshman Robert McDaniel is transferring to San Jose State ahead of his first year in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a>, as reported by On3.

<h2>Short-lived stay in LA</h2>



McDaniel committed to UCLA as a three-star recruit in the 2025 recruiting class, but has now signed with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-jose-state">San Jose State Spartans</a>, as the QB room LA is preparing to welcome in Nicholas and Madden Iamaleava ahead of the 2025 NCAA season.

Former Volunteers offensive lineman Larry Johnson III has signed with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/colorado-buffaloes">Buffaloes</a>, after two years in Knoxville, where he participated in 15 career games in Knoxville, including 11 contests in 2024, mostly at left tackle, per On3.

<h2>Buffaloes sign Kansas State transfer</h2>



Deion and the Buffaloes made more roster moves as Colorado didn’t end the transfer portal signings at Johnson III and Slaughter. The Buffaloes added another weapon for their secondary, bringing in freshman Noah King who is transferring from the Kansas State Wildcats.

While many argue the reason for his departure was entirely money-wise, UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster voiced a bold admission, stating otherwise.



Iamaleava had become a star in Knoxville, guiding the Volunteers to a College Football Playoff appearance, in which they were knocked out by the Ohio State Buckeyes in the First Round. However, the program’s floor had been established, and it felt like the Vols could only go upwards.

“[Nico Iamaleava] wanted to come home and be closer to his family,” DeShaun Foster admitted, per On3. “So, I think the family played a big role in being able to come back to California. I think that played a big role, too.”

Iamaleava, a born and raised South Californian, attended both Warren High School in Downey, California and Long Beach Polytechnic High School before enrolling at Tennessee in the 2023 recruiting class. 



He had blossomed into one of the top starting quarterbacks in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a>, thriving in the highly competitive SEC. However, it seems homesickness got the best of him, ultimately leading to his decision to return to the Golden State.
