Bill Belichick‘s era with the North Carolina Tar Heels has gotten off to a dramatic start before a single snap of football was even played in Chapel Hill. Ahead of the 2025 NCAA season, the Tar Heels’ head coach might reportedly pull a shocking move amid much buzz surrounding his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson.

Hudson has stirred almost a bigger public reaction in Chapel Hill than the six-time Super Bowl winning head coach’s arrival itself. According to reports, Hudson has been directly involved in most of Belichick’s latest decisions, essentially becoming an image assistant for the 73-year-old football mastermind.

Recent reports suggested that Hudson had been banned from the Tar Heels‘ football facilities, though those claims were later denied by the school in Chapel Hill. Still, the speculation hasn’t subsided, as Hudson’s presence continues to draw scrutiny over Belichick’s every move.

Now, reports from Pablo Torre indicate there’s a ‘real chance’ Belichick could cut his stay in North Carolina short, thanks to a drastic measure enabled by an asterisk in his contract.

As drama seems to follow Belichick everywhere in Chapel Hill, June 1st is a date to pay close attention to, according to Torre. In an interview on The Dominique Foxworth Show, Torre hinted Belichick could leave the school before making his coaching debut in college football.

I think there’s a chance, an absolutely real chance, that he doesn’t [coach Week 1],Torre stated. “Everybody who follows contractual language pointed out that on June 1, the buyout of Bill Belichick goes from $10 million to $1 million if Bill wanted the escape hatch, right? So if he wanted out suddenly, it was very interesting that the amount got 10 times less after June 1.

Exit route

While the buyout in Belichick’s contract raised suspicion as soon as it became public, with many indicating it meant he was leaving the NCAA for the NFL in the offseason, it has a completely different meaning as there is now a more realistic reasoning for Belichick to leave.

Still, if Belichick were to leave Chapel Hill, there are currently no head coaching vacancies in the NFL, and it would take an urgent move for any team to part ways with their current coordinators to bring him in just three months before the new season begins.
