Yankees reportedly criticized for what they did with Oswald Peraza’s career

Following Oswald Peraza’s departure, fresh details emerged suggesting the Yankees may have negatively impacted his development — something he may now be able to move on from with a new team.

The New York Yankees moved on from Oswald Peraza at the trade deadline — a move that was expected, but now seems more than justified following a new report suggesting his development had stalled in the Bronx and that a change of scenery might serve him well.

With Peraza once again struggling this season, the Yankees dealt the Venezuelan infielder to the Los Angeles Angels. But according to a report by Jon Alba of SNY, the departure could end up helping him far more than it hurts, as multiple league sources reportedly believe Peraza had hit a wall in New York.

“I’ve had several MLB sources indicate to me they felt Oswald Peraza’s progression was completely stunted by the Yankees developmental process. He’s a great defender with top-tier speed, but he may benefit from a new start with fresh eyes on his progression,” Alba wrote on X.

Peraza May Have More to Offer Outside the Yankees

In 2025, Peraza played the most games of any single season in his MLB career, appearing in 71 games with the Yankees — and is expected to add to that total with the Angels, setting a new career high in games played.

“Peraza’s ceiling is probably no more than a solid utility plug-and-play guy at this juncture, in my opinion,” Alba added. “But that doesn’t mean he can’t be valuable if someone finds something to unlock in him.”

What Was Peraza Earning With the Yankees?

Peraza began earning MLB salary with the Yankees in 2022 when he signed his first professional deal worth $700,000. This year, he was playing under a one-year contract worth $772,700 — the highest salary of his career to date.
