The Golden State Warriors may be facing new competition in their pursuit of veteran big man Al Horford, with reports indicating that two teams have entered the mix.

Golden State Warriors are one of the few NBA teams that have remained quiet during the early stages of the offseason. Despite strong indications that Al Horford was close to signing with the Warriors in free agency, no deal has been finalized. Now, two other Eastern Conference teams have reportedly expressed interest in the 39-year-old former Boston Celtics forward.

Horford’s future in the league remains uncertain, as retirement is still on the table. However, one thing appears clear—he won’t be returning to the Celtics. During a press conference, Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens addressed the situation.

We made offers to both Luke (Kornet) and Al (Horford). We would love to have both of them back. I’d say that’s unlikely,” Stevens said. With Kornet already signing with the San Antonio Spurs, signs point to Horford also moving on from Boston.

Golden State had been considered the frontrunner for Horford’s services, but ESPN’s Marc Spears revealed on NBA Today that two other teams, alongside the Lakers, are now in play. “Golden State obviously expected him to sign last week, he didn’t [sign],” Spears reported. “Lakers, Milwaukee, and Atlanta, I believe are also interested in a nearly 40-year-old guy who also has retirement on the table“.

He’s still considering retiring, he’s not in any hurry. He’s got a sixth kid coming on the way, he lives in Atlanta and Boston in the offseason. I’m hearing that whether it’s Golden State and a lesser extent to the Lakers, being away from the family that far isn’t going to be in that decision,” he added.

Despite his age, Horford remains a productive two-way contributor. Last season, he averaged 9.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 36.3% from three-point range. His leadership, floor spacing, and defensive versatility make him a valuable piece for contenders.

Kuminga’s contract situation creating logjam in Golden State

One factor reportedly slowing down Golden State’s offseason activity is the unresolved situation surrounding forward Jonathan Kuminga. Despite showing flashes of elite potential during the playoffs, Kuminga’s fit within head coach Steve Kerr’s system remains in question.

According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, Kuminga’s status is impacting the Warriors’ ability to move forward in free agency. “Until Kuminga’s situation is figured out, the Warriors can’t make any other moves since his contract will push them close to the first apron,” Siegel reported.

As Horford weighs his options—and his future in the league—teams around the NBA will be watching closely to see whether the five-time All-Star chooses to continue his career or hang up his sneakers after 17 seasons.
