The New Orleans Saints have three names battling out to become the starting quarterback come Week 1. Spencer Rattler, Tyler Shough and Jake Haener are the ones fighting to line up with Alvin Kamara and the rest of the offense.
It’s been three sessions of training camp where all the quarterbacks have worked with the starting offense. Haener spoke to Matthew Paras of Baton Rouge Advocate about the fact that much of the talk has been directed to Shough and Rattler and not him.
“I believe this organization — respect them, they drafted me — if they didn’t truly believe I could be a guy that they think couldn’t win the starting job, they wouldn’t include me in it. Simple as that. They wouldn’t make me feel good about myself. I totally see it as a three-man race. I think I’ve earned that right,” Haener said.
Haener’s numbers aren’t good in the NFL
Haener played 8 games last season, though he only started one of them. However, his numbers are not inspiring. He completed 46.2% of his passes for only 226 yards. One touchdown and one interception won’t cut it in the NFL either. His passer rate is a low 62.6.

Jake Haener, quarterback for the New Orleans Saints
Haener didn’t have much to work with but still, he hasn’t showed anything to definitely say he is a starting-caliber quarterback in this league. Thankfully for him, he is still in the mix according to what the Saints say.

Competition is not that fierce on the Saints
Spencer Rattler played seven games, started six. He completed 57% of his passes and threw 4 touchdowns to 5 interceptions. His passer rate was just above Haener’s at a 70.4. Rattler also didn’t impress much.
The new face on the block is second-round rookie Tyler Shough. He played seven years at College for Oregon, Texas Tech and Louisville. Not many great prospects spend that much time in the college scene. Shough hasn’t been good enough in training camp and spring sessions to secure his spot as QB1 either. None of the three quarterbacks are awe-inspiring, but one of them will start for the Saints.
