NFL News: Aaron Rodgers could reportedly be passed over by Steelers in favor of another star quarterback

The Pittsburgh Steelers may be shifting gears in their quarterback search. Despite ongoing rumors linking Aaron Rodgers to the team, reports suggest the Steelers could pass on the veteran star in favor of pursuing another marquee quarterback.

Aaron Rodgers still hasn’t communicated his final decision to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and that could change the team’s plans in the coming weeks. According to a report by Albert Breer, if the veteran doesn’t give a positive response, Kirk Cousins will be an option for Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan.

“The Steelers have signaled, and even publicly expressed, their confidence that Rodgers will wind up on their roster. And if he doesn’t, I’d imagine they’d explore a trade for Kirk Cousins. It’d be pretty surprising if they opened training camp with Mason Rudolph.”

The Steelers are far from being a Super Bowl contender and need a quarterback who can help them compete in the AFC against teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, the Buffalo Bills, or the Baltimore Ravens. Right now, their depth chart doesn’t seem ready for that challenge.

Who will be Steelers starting quarterback?

Aaron Rodgers is the starting quarterback chosen by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the entire roster-building plan revolves around that. Even the 2025 Draft reflected this, as they didn’t select a player at that position in the first round.

However, as has been the case since the interview with Pat McAfee, Breer mentions that the process is taking longer than usual, and that could create a lot of uncertainty about the future of the organization.

“He referenced a personal issue within his circle that had slowed the process to this point, and I think we can all respect that. My feeling is some of the narratives out there wouldn’t have been spun the same way if that information was public earlier. Either way, if whatever Rodgers is working through was enough to press pause on his decision-making process, I can see where the Pittsburgh Steelers would tread lightly.”
