NFL News: Mike Tomlin and Steelers reportedly have a starting quarterback ready if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t choose Pittsburgh

With Aaron Rodgers still undecided, the Steelers aren't panicking. Sources say Mike Tomlin and the front office already have a starting quarterback in place, showing confidence in their backup plan as Pittsburgh eyes stability under center.

Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers are not overly worried about Aaron Rodgers, as they trust Mason Rudolph as an alternative plan. According to a report by Ray Fittipaldo, that explains the lack of urgency to address the quarterback position.

“He’s the best option available (Rodgers) and their only other option right now is Mason Rudolph. I honestly think it’s that simple. Believe me, they wouldn’t have their hearts broken if Aaron Rodgers retires, because they like Mason Rudolph. They believe that Rodgers is an upgrade over Rudolph. That’s why they’re doing it. They’re not gonna pay a lot of money for him and they’re gonna see if they can contend for the playoffs one more time with their core guys. That’s basically what this is all about.”

The Steelers haven’t won the Super Bowl in over 16 years, and after the departure of George Pickens, the team seems far from being able to compete with AFC powerhouses like the Kansas City Chiefs or the Buffalo Bills.

Who will be Steelers starting quarterback?

The Steelers would be content with Mason Rudolph as their starting quarterback if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t sign with the team. That’s why Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan haven’t been active in signing another player in free agency.

The final big question, if Rodgers rejects Pittsburgh’s offer, would be a possible last effort for a veteran as Khan promised. In that scenario, the only real option to compete for a championship would be Kirk Cousins, with the condition that a trade with the Falcons would be required.
