The Pittsburgh Steelers are getting closer to resolving their starting quarterback situation for the 2025 NFL season after seeing Russell Wilson and Justin Fields become free agents. Head coach Mike Tomlin is waiting for updates as the franchise takes action toward Aaron Rodgers.

It’s no secret that the Steelers are interested in signing Rodgers, but the situations with Wilson and Fields cast some doubt on the matter, as Pittsburgh had stated that their priority was offering an extension to one of the two. With the former Chicago Bears QB heading to the New York Jets, the path now seems clearer.

With Fields out of the Steelers’ options, Wilson decided to visit the New York Giants and the Cleveland Browns to shape his future in the league. Meanwhile, Rodgers is officially a free agent, and Tomlin‘s team now has the green light to negotiate with him. It seems they’ve already begun taking action.

Steelers’ move to sign Rodgers

According to NFL insider Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers have made an offer to Rodgers and are waiting for a decision from the former Super Bowl champion quarterback. Formal negotiations have begun, and there are three possible responses: acceptance, rejection, or a counteroffer from A-Rod.

Dulac had previously reported on Tuesday that the Steelers are considering signing Rodgers instead of pursuing Wilson, but they could turn back to Russ if negotiations with the former Green Bay Packers player stall or if an agreement isn’t reached.

What will Rodgers decide?

When it seemed like the 41-year-old veteran quarterback would be left without options after his departure from the Jets, it now appears that Rodgers has serious suitors. The Giants are another team linked to A-Rod, while the Steelers have already made their offer. Now, the former Packers player is taking his time to make a decision.
