NFL Rumors: Dolphins let NCAA star know they want him to be Tua Tagovailoa’s backup in 2025

Tua Tagovailoa faced challenges throughout the last NFL season, and his struggles have reportedly led the Miami Dolphins to explore other options. According to reports, the team has informed a standout NCAA star of their interest in him.

The Miami Dolphins understand that nothing lasts forever. Despite having standout players like Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill, they fell short of their ultimate goal in the last NFL season. As a result, the front office is already exploring potential reinforcements from the NCAA, according to a recent report.

After a disappointing campaign, Dolphins fans are eager to see the team make impactful moves to improve next season. While there’s still plenty of time to assess prospects and strengthen the roster, Miami appears to be proactive in its approach.

According to The Miami Herald’s C. Isaiah Smalls, NCAA standout Jalen Milroe revealed that he has already been in contact with the Dolphins regarding a potential backup role behind Tagovailoa in 2025. “Bama QB Jalen Milroe has had conversations with the Miami Dolphins about their backup quarterback position, he said,” Smalls reported via X. “Also added that conversations ‘went well.’”

Milroe is widely projected as a potential first-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, though some experts believe he could fall to the second round. However, with Miami showing interest, his draft stock could see a shift as teams evaluate the young Arizona standout.

McDaniel could strengthen Dolphins’ roster with Milroe

One of the biggest challenges for the Dolphins last season was dealing with injuries to key players. Tagovailoa missed nearly half of the 2024-25 campaign, and head coach Mike McDaniel struggled to find a reliable solution. That’s why Milroe could be a compelling alternative.

With an impressive season at Alabama, Milroe could provide much-needed depth for Miami, stepping in if Tagovailoa faces setbacks. His presence could also spark a healthy competition for the starting job, pushing both quarterbacks to elevate their performances.

Milroe’s standout season in college football

Milroe’s experience as a three-year NCAA player makes him an intriguing prospect—not just for the Dolphins’ coaching staff but also for fans eager to see him in action. His arrival could generate heightened excitement and stronger attendance for the 2025 season.

Statistically, Milroe played 13 games for Alabama last season, completing 205 of 319 pass attempts (64.3%) for 2,844 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also recorded 11 interceptions and showcased his dual-threat ability with 726 rushing yards.
