Uncertainty surrounding Braxton Berrios grew after the New York Giants wide receiver was not even suited up for the preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. With the Giants and John Harbaugh facing difficult decisions at wide receiver, his absence immediately raised questions about his standing on the roster.

Berrios’ situation was particularly intriguing because the Giants have one of the most crowded wide receiver rooms on the roster. With several experienced players competing for limited spots, an unexpected absence can quickly fuel speculation about a potential trade or roster move.

However, head coach John Harbaugh provided an important update after the game. Speaking to the New York Post, Harbaugh explained that Berrios did not play because of a minor soft-tissue issue and said he should be fine this week.

Why didn’t Braxton Berrios play against the Dolphins?

According to John Harbaugh, Braxton Berrios’ absence was injury-related rather than a reflection of his position on the Giants’ roster. The veteran receiver was held out as a precaution because of the minor soft-tissue issue, with the expectation that he will be healthy enough to return to practice this week.

That clarification significantly changes the picture surrounding Berrios. His decision not to suit up could have been interpreted as a sign that the Giants were preparing to move on from him, particularly with so many receivers competing for roster spots.

Instead, the latest information points to a much simpler explanation. For now, there is no indication that Berrios’ absence against Miami was connected to a potential trade or an impending roster cut.

Giants have a crowded WR room

Even with the injury explanation, Braxton Berrios remains part of an extremely competitive battle for roster spots. Malik Nabers, Malachi Fields and Odell Beckham Jr. appear to have strong positions on the depth chart, but several veterans are competing for the remaining opportunities.

Berrios is one of those players, alongside names such as Darnell Mooney and Darius Slayton. All three have NFL experience and could be valuable to other teams, which naturally makes them potential trade assets as the Giants attempt to trim down their roster.

The Giants therefore face some difficult decisions at wide receiver. The talent and experience in the room could make it difficult for every player to remain in New York, particularly if the coaching staff wants to create opportunities for younger receivers.

For Berrios, though, the immediate concern appears to be health rather than his roster status. Harbaugh’s comments indicate that the veteran should be back this week, meaning the rumors surrounding his absence against Miami can be put to rest, at least for now.
