As the 2025 NHL Draft wraps up, the Calgary Flames are shifting their attention toward roster decisions that could shape their future—and high on that list is the contract status of defenseman Rasmus Andersson.

The 27-year-old has been a core piece of the Flames’ blue line for nearly a decade, emerging as a leader on and off the ice. Calgary wants to keep the Swedish blueliner in town long term, but negotiations haven’t produced much traction with free agency looming just days away.

Speaking on TSN, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun gave a sobering update: “Doesn’t sound like the Flames are close on anything regarding Rasmus Andersson at this point. Obviously that (changes) with one phone call, but at this point nothing that’s been offered has moved the needle for them. They’re happy to be patient on it.”

Why Calgary wants to keep Andersson

Andersson has spent his entire nine-year career in Calgary, developing into a reliable top-four defenseman. He matched his career high with 11 goals last season and added 20 assists, reinforcing his value in both zones. With one year remaining on his current deal, the Flames still have time, but trade rumors surrounding Andersson this summer have added a layer of urgency.

The Flames are coming off a third consecutive playoff miss and face pressure to revamp their core. Keeping Andersson—one of their most consistent performers—would offer continuity and leadership during what could be a transitional offseason.

Next steps for Flames front office

While not considered the most urgent piece of business on Calgary’s offseason agenda, the Andersson situation will continue to be monitored closely. His contract status could influence other decisions, including potential trades and how aggressive the NHL team is in free agency.
