The Toronto Maple Leafs have taken care of one major piece of business ahead of July 1 by locking in John Tavares to a new deal. But the future of his long-time teammate Mitch Marner remains unresolved — and increasingly uncertain.

After signing a discounted four-year extension to remain in Toronto, Tavares addressed the looming possibility of Marner departing as a free agent. The 27-year-old winger, coming off a 100-point season, has yet to reach an agreement with the Leafs and is now widely expected to test the open market.

SpSpeaking with reporters after signing his new contract with the Maple Leafs, Tavares addressed the situation with honesty and clarity. “You never know,” he said. “You always hold out hope that a person and a player like Mitchy ends up staying, and it works out, but you are also realistic about the situation, where things are at, and what could potentially happen.”

Tavares extends, Marner expected to walk

While Tavares’ team-friendly contract — a four-year, $17.55 million deal — signals his continued commitment to Toronto’s core, Marner’s case appears more complicated. The Leafs’ alternate captain is expected to be the most coveted name in this summer’s free-agent class.

Marner tallied 102 points in 81 games last season and added 13 points in 13 playoff contests. According to Daily Faceoff, he’s projected to land a seven-year deal worth $13 million annually, which could place him beyond Toronto’s current financial structure.

Leafs GM Brad Treliving added more fuel to that narrative when speaking to media before the 2025 NHL Draft. “Unless there is significant change here, I would anticipate he’s going to hit the market,” he said. We’ve had communication. I wouldn’t say a whole lot of change right now.

A legacy in Toronto, with a twist to come

Marner has spent his entire nine-year NHL career with the Maple Leafs, logging 741 points in 657 regular-season games, along with 50 points in 70 playoff appearances. His on-ice connection with Tavares and Auston Matthews helped shape the team’s competitive identity.

Still, even Tavares recognizes the moment could mark the end of an era. “If he does move on, I wish him the best, he said, “but you always hold out slight hope that it works out.”
