The Auston Matthews’ Toronto Maple Leafs are bracing for a transformational offseason as star forward Mitch Marner is widely expected to leave the franchise in free agency. While his departure would mark the end of an era in Toronto, a potential replacement may already be emerging on the radar.
According to a report by CBS Sports’ Chris Bengel, the Maple Leafs are a strong candidate to land Brock Boeser, the 28-year-old right winger currently with the Vancouver Canucks, should Marner sign elsewhere. Boeser, who still has elite finishing ability despite a slight dip in production, would help reinforce Toronto’s top-six forward group.
Speaking about Boeser’s potential fit, Bengel described him as “a crafty goal scorer that can find the back of the net from just about anywhere on the ice,” noting that “teams like the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs also make a ton of sense for the star winger.”
Boeser acknowledges Vancouver exit likely
While there’s still a possibility Marner returns, Boeser appears to be preparing for a change of scenery. When asked directly about his future with the Canucks, the veteran forward admitted he’s not expecting a reunion.

“Honestly, it’s unlikely at this point,” Boeser said. “It [stinks]. It’s unfortunate. I’m just trying to play good hockey and then I’ll worry about everything after that. We all know it’s been a roller coaster of a year. There’s been a lot of different things.”

Boeser has one year remaining on his current contract, which carries a $6.65 million cap hit. Should the Leafs pursue him in free agency or trade, they’ll likely need to make further cap adjustments.
Toronto’s free agency strategy taking shape
If Marner signs with the Vegas Golden Knights, as Bengel projects, Toronto could pivot to securing Boeser’s offensive upside to soften the blow. Boeser posted 55 points (22 goals, 33 assists) last season and brings playoff experience and a scoring touch the Leafs will need.
