NHL News: Hurricanes have major obstacle regarding interest in Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner

Mitch Marner is being closely monitored by the Carolina Hurricanes ahead of his imminent departure from the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2025–26 NHL season. However, an obstacle may stand in the way of that pursuit.

Mitch Marner has become one of the most sought-after players in the NHL after reports confirmed that his contract extension talks with the Toronto Maple Leafs are unlikely to succeed. The 28-year-old forward is expected to test the free agency market, and the Carolina Hurricanes are reportedly interested in making a push to sign him.

While the Canes were close to acquiring him via trade a few months ago, that deal ultimately fell through. Now, with significant cap space available, Carolina is once again considering a move for a player of Marner’s caliber.

Following a disappointing season, the Hurricanes are looking to build a truly competitive roster. Marner could be a perfect fit for their offensive needs, bringing the scoring power that helped him net 27 goals last season. However, a new obstacle has emerged that could derail those plans.

What’s stopping Carolina from making a move for Marner?

According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, the Hurricanes have other priorities that may prevent them from making a massive offer for Marner. Having cap space isn’t enough when multiple roster needs must be addressed.

“They have $30 million to spend and plan to check in on unrestricted free agent Mitch Marner, like many contending teams, but they’re not going all in on just one target,” LeBrun reported regarding Carolina’s strategy.
