Fans in Manhattan may not dare say it, yet, but it’s sure looking that way. After a rocky start to his tenure, it seems <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mike-sullivan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mike Sullivan</a> and the New York Rangers are finally starting to click. One great indicator of that might just be J.T. Miller’s latest statement in the 2025-26 NHL season.



Making his return to the lineup after a two-game absence, Miller recorded an assist during the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rangers</a>’ visit to the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh. However, the captain did just what captains do: wear his heart on a sleeve when addressing the rest of the team. With a very sincere comment, the 32-year-old let Sullivan and company know his thoughts on New York’s performance in the City of Oaks.



“Tonight, I don’t think we were at our best,” Miller honestly commented after the game, via The New York Post. “We found a way to win, and I thought our third was our best period. It’s funny, you go out through the first 15 games of the year, how many games we thought we should have won. This is one of those that hopefully can help even some of those out.”



While Miller—and everybody on the Rangers—will gladly take the win and move on, the captain’s comments do serve as a reminder to Sullivan and the coaching staff. The way New York is playing can work for now, but it will most likely be short-lived. Sooner or later, the Blueshirts will have to show consistency.

<h2>Rangers know they can’t win them all</h2>

Moreover, it’s impossible for a team to play at the top of their game every single outing.

Although Sullivan never coached Miller in New York City, the blueliner may still be out to make a statement against the two-time Stanley Cup–winning bench boss. According to reports, two players recently acquitted of charges could return to the NHL by joining the Hurricanes.



“Per sources, there is an expectation free agent forward Michael McLeod will be joining the Hurricanes this season. Carolina also checked on Carter Hart,” insider David Pagnotta recently commented.

<h2>High ceiling</h2>



Obviously, no signing of a player involved in the trial can ever be considered a low-risk investment. However, strictly on the hockey-side of the conversation, signing McLeod might be a somewhat safe bet.

However, McLeod hasn’t played an NHL game since January 2024. Needless to say, it’s hard to tell how he will return to the ice in December if he does sign with a new team for the 2025-26 campaign. Still, if his background with the New Jersey Devils is still insightful, the Canes could be acquiring an important piece for their puzzle.



<h2>Another one</h2>



If there’s one aspect of McLeod’s game the Hurricanes can be excited about, it’s his ability to win possession at the dot. The former first-round pick in 2016 excels on faceoffs, posting a career average success rate of 58.3%. 



Moreover, in his most recent season, he registered a 65% rate—ranking eighth in the league and second among centermen. That only increases his value, as many of the players above him likely took faceoffs more sporadically, which can inflate their percentages.

It’s not like the Hurricanes have struggled at the faceoff circle. Over the last decade, the team in Raleigh has been renowned around the league for its ability to win possession. Since the 2015-16 campaign, the Hurricanes rank first in the NHL with a faceoff win percentage of 52.6%. Still, adding another player who can win pucks at the dot is never a bad thing.

The Carolina Hurricanes are taking a chance on a former teammate of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/matthew-tkachuk">Matthew Tkachuk</a> in the Florida Panthers. Ahead of the 2025-26 NHL season, the organization in Raleigh announced two signings to professional try-out contracts (PTO).



The Hurricanes are gearing up for a crucial 2025-26 NHL campaign. After being knocked out by the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida-panthers">Panthers</a> in the Eastern Conference Final, the Canes eye revenge. In hopes of doing so, Carolina has signed a familiar face in Florida. 



As reported by @PuckReportNHL on X, forward Givani Smith has signed a professional try-out deal with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/carolina-hurricanes">Hurricanes</a>. The former teammate of Tkachuk and the Panthers is now hoping to earn a spot in the Canes’ opening night roster.



<h2>End the hex</h2>



In addition to Smith, the Hurricanes are also bringing in defenseman Oliver Kylington, who’s had stints in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> with the Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, and the Anaheim Ducks.

The goal for the Hurricanes is clear. After yet another loss in the Eastern Conference Final, Carolina must finally put its ghosts from the past to rest. The Canes have struggled tremendously in the Stanley Cup semi final, as they have won only one game in their last 17 appearances in the ECF.

<h2>Smith’s background</h2>



Givani Smith was selected with the 46th overall pick in the 2016 NHL entry Draft by the Detorit Red Wings. He made his league debut during the 2019-20 season, which he finished with 3 points (2G, 1A) in 21 appearances.



Smith was traded to the Panthers in 2022, he spent his tenure with moves up and down the ranks in the NHL and AHL. Though a member of the roster which reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2023, Smith played only one game in the postseason, recording no points.

Since, Florida let Smith walk as an unrestricted free agent in 2023, when he joined the San Jose Sharks. The Sharks traded him to the Colorado Avalanche in 2024, and the Avs shipped him off to the Philadelphia Flyers in March 2025.

Rod Brind’Amour and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/carolina-hurricanes">Carolina Hurricanes</a> couldn’t help but feel sorry for Jesper Fast, whose career was cut short due to injuries at 33 years of age. Therefore, ahead of the 2025-26 NHL season, the Canes handed the former winger a new job within the organization.



After missing the entire 2024-25 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season, Fast announced he’d be hanging up the skates last June. Despite having surgery on his neck, Fast was never able to get back on the ice and has now called it a career. Still, one can take a player out of hockey, but one can never take hockey out of a player.



Ahead of the new campaign, Brind’Amour and the Hurricanes have welcomed Fast to a role within the coaching staff and close to his former teammates in Raleigh. As announced by @PuckReportNHL on X, Carolina signed Jesper Fast as a development coach for the upcoming season.

As he embarks onto a new chapter of his NHL career, Fast leaves behind a great legacy. Playing only for the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes, the Swedish forward totaled 248 points (91 goals and 157 assists) in 703 games.

Hadn’t Fast sustained such a serious neck injury in the final game of the 2023–24 regular season, who knows if his name would someday be on the Stanley Cup. At least as a player. Now, he will chase that feat in a different job position, but in Wake County, nevertheless.

Former Hurricanes forward Jake Guentzel recently spoke about his brief and forgettable time in Raleigh. Traded to Carolina during the 2024 trade deadline, the Stanley Cup champ was expected to bolster the Canes for a championship run. 



However, the Hurricanes fell in the second round to the Rangers, and Guentzel’s camp didn’t make any progress toward working out an extension in North Carolina. Thus, the Hurricanes were left with no choice but to trade him before losing the forward as an unrestricted free agent. 



“Yeah, just, there was kind of a lot of back and forth before free agency. Was hoping to get a deal done right after the season, just didn’t kind of come to fruition,” Guentzel admitted, via Cam and Strick Podcast. “And then Tampa came, traded for my rights, and I think that was a no-brainer for me when that happened.”

The expectation would be okay, he’s a guy who can fit into maybe your second line; likely the third line, the most positive, optimistic outcome is he’s an impact player. He has had only two 20-goal seasons, averaging 9.6 goals in other campaigns, and defensive lapses could further complicate his contribution.

One of the top unrestricted free agents (UFA) in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> market is still available, and the Hurricanes might be looking elsewhere. After signing Jackson Blake to an eight-year, $40.94 million extension, the Canes are seemingly calling it a day.



The same can’t be said about owner Dundon, who has now made a surprising purchase in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nba">NBA</a>. Still, Dundon isn’t investing in fellow North Carolina organziation, the Charlotte Hornets. Instead, the 53-year-old is now buying a franchise in the opposite coast of the nation, concretely in Oregon.



As reported by ESPN‘s insider Shams Charania, Dundon has agreed to purchase the Portland Trail Blazers for a valuation of over $4 billion. The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/portland-trail-blazers">Trail Blazers</a> were previously owned by Paul G. Allen, who has now sold the NBA franchise ahead of Damian Lillard’s return.

<h2>Roslovic drama</h2>



According to reports around the NHL, the Hurricanes may have shut the door on re-signing Roslovic. On that note, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks are trending to be the frontrunners to the 28-year-old forward.

“People seem to wonder is Toronto the fit [for Roslovic]? Particularly, with some of the production in goals the Leafs have lost. I could see that happening,” Frank Seravalli said on Insider Notebook. “But we know Toronto’s cap situation is still going to be tight. I think Roslovic deserves to be paid after the year he had. The question is how much? Be curious about another team: the Vancouver Canucks, that would make a lot of sense for Roslovic, as well.”



<h2>Value skyrocketted</h2>



After scoring 22 goals in the 2024-25 NHL season, Roslovic was due for a considerable payday in the league. Still, weeks have gone by, and the skater and his camp have yet to put pen to paper. It might only be a matter of time, but the delay must be making Roslovic grow a bit anxious, to say the least. A return to Wake County is looking more utopian by the minute.



“For Carolina and Roslovic, the door isn’t completely closed, but they don’t really have a spot for him at the moment. So you can probably cross off the Carolina Hurricanes on the list,” Seravalli stated. “I am told the Roslovic camp does not have a deal in place anywhere, but they’re getting closer,

While expectations for the Carolina Hurricanes last <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season included serious hopes of reaching the Stanley Cup Finals, their overall performance was still impressive. That said, some believe certain decisions may have influenced the outcome — including Mikko Rantanen’s departure to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/dallas-stars">Dallas Stars</a>.


 


Pyotr Kochetkov, one of the standout players under Rod Brind’Amour, was blunt when addressing the team’s situation — acknowledging that the departure of extraordinary talent from the roster may have held back the team from reaching an even higher level.



Although Rantanen had a brief stint with the Hurricanes after being traded from the Colorado Avalanche, his level of play impressed everyone within <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/carolina-hurricanes">Carolina</a>’s facilities — though unfortunately, the excitement didn’t last long.



“We lost Rantanen, Necas – it would be stupid to turn a blind eye to that, because they are key players, leaders of the team,” the goalie said via sports.ru. “Even though Rantanen did not become a leader for us, you saw what he did in Dallas. You could say he led the team to the second round when he beat Colorado in Game 7.”

 “He was a high-level player. You see how he acts, how he sees the game. Even in the training process, there was something to learn from him,” Kochetkov also added. “He is a great professional, he has been playing in the league for a long time. There were many interesting things that he did – his routine. Overall, I can only speak positively about him.”

<h2>Necas was another departure Kochetkov openly lamented</h2>



The Carolina Hurricanes traded forward Martin Necas to the Colorado Avalanche as part of a three-team blockbuster deal in January 2025. This move came after a season of trade speculation and a short-term contract that did not fully resolve his long-term future with the team. 



While Necas provided a high-skill offensive presence and speed, his departure was a significant shake-up to the Hurricanes’ forward group.



In exchange for Necas and other assets, the Hurricanes acquired <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mikko-rantanen">Mikko Rantanen</a> from Colorado and Taylor Hall from the Chicago Blackhawks. Gustav Forsling is currently one of the biggest stars on the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida-panthers">Florida Panthers</a>, where he has impressively lifted the Stanley Cup twice. Before joining Brad Marchand’s squad, the talented defenseman had a brief stint with the Carolina Hurricanes earlier in his NHL career.


 


History shows that Forsling’s time in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/carolina-hurricanes">Carolina</a> was far from memorable, as he was quickly moved to the Panthers. A decision that, according to then-GM Don Waddell, stands as one of the biggest regrets of his career.



During a recent appearance on ‘The Cam and Strick Podcast,’ Waddell reflected on some of the poor decisions he made throughout his career — and among the worst, he admitted, was letting go of the Swedish defenseman so quickly.



“Before we did it, I knew it was going to be a mistake,” the current GM of the Columbus Blue Jackets specifically addressed the decision to place Forsling on waivers back in January 2021.

“They just felt that he was the odd guy out at that time, and so we got put in a situation, and I can remember saying we are going to regret this down the road, and some people thought he might slide through waivers.”

<h2>Waddell’s self-criticism</h2>



As the saying goes, hindsight is 20/20 — and it’s now clear that the decision made at the time by the Hurricanes’ front office was completely off the mark. Something that, according to Waddell himself, he fully takes responsibility for.



“In the end of the day, it’s my decision. I take full blame for it because I am the one who has to make that decision and do it,” the former Hurricanes General Manager firmly stated.

Gustav Forsling’s tenure with the Florida Panthers has been a remarkable success story.
