NHL News: Penguins could see Patrick Kane's Red Wings as a strong destination for Sidney Crosby’s star teammate

Patrick Kane’s Detroit Red Wings are reportedly among the wide range of suitors for a star teammate of Sidney Crosby on the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are undergoing a full rebuild ahead of the 2025–26 NHL season.

With the Pittsburgh Penguins undergoing a major rebuild after another season missing the playoffs, Erik Karlsson’s name is once again at the center of trade rumors. Despite currently sharing the locker room with Sidney Crosby, insiders are suggesting the Swedish defenseman could be on the move in the coming weeks. He has even been linked to Patrick Kane’s Detroit Red Wings.

Karlsson joined the Penguins in 2023 as part of an ambitious core alongside Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and other stars. While his arrival sparked excitement, the veteran defenseman and the rest of the roster haven’t meshed as expected. The lack of results, combined with his hefty $10 million cap hit, has pushed Pittsburgh to consider moving him.

The Penguins are aiming for a full roster overhaul, which has made a move to Detroit a very real possibility, one that would draw attention across the NHL. Karlsson has two years remaining on his deal and a no-movement clause, so updates are expected soon.

Are the Red Wings in the mix for Karlsson?

In a recent Inside Hockey report, NHL insider John Shannon addressed the rumors directly: “Whether it’s Ottawa, which I would be shocked; Detroit, I think that’s a much more realistic situation; there’s some logical places.” Shannon sees Kane’s Red Wings as a much more viable landing spot than a sentimental return to the Senators.

Potential destinations for Karlsson

Among the most realistic candidates to land Karlsson are the Vegas Golden Knights, who could be in need of a right-shot defenseman if Alex Pietrangelo retires. The Tampa Bay Lightning are also being mentioned as a possibility, especially given Karlsson’s long-standing connection with Victor Hedman.

The Carolina Hurricanes are another franchise reportedly interested in bolstering their blue line with Karlsson, provided they can manage the cap space. His offensive spark from the back end could be the missing piece in their bid for a Stanley Cup push.
