<h2>What they pay them for</h2>



It hasn’t always been pretty for the Maple Leafs in the 2025-26 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> season—nor for their top line. Featuring the three biggest contracts on the roster, fans naturally expect plenty from the trio of Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and Matthew Knies.

However, the group hasn’t had much luck to start the campaign. But with a statement performance against Crosby and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/pittsburgh-penguins" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Penguins</a>’ top unit, it looks like Toronto’s number one line has found its footing.



Matthews, Nylander, and Knies were involved in three of the Maple Leafs’ four goals against the Penguins. When the Buds needed their stars most, they rose to the occasion—combining for three tallies in under four minutes. 



<h2>Riding the wave</h2>



Nylander earned first-star honors, finishing the night with two goals and an assist while extending his point streak to seven games, totaling 14 points over that span. Matthews added a goal and an assist, building a two-game point streak he’ll look to keep alive as the NHL season rolls on.

As for Knies—who signed a six-year, $46.5 million deal with Toronto this offseason—the young forward chipped in an assist to stretch his point streak to five games, amassing eight points in that stretch.



Although point streaks are always encouraging to see, all fans truly care about is winning. The Maple Leafs have now won two games in a row and have a prime opportunity to keep the fire burning. It may be early in the NHL season, but now is as good a time as any for Toronto to cement its spot atop the Atlantic Division standings. With divisional opponents facing major setbacks across the board, Toronto has its fair share of adversity brewing—but nothing Matthews and company don’t believe they can handle.

Fans in Pittsburgh have grown accustomed to Malkin’s style of play. The 39-year-old veteran plays with passion, but that can sometimes slip out of his control. Against the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/winnipeg-jets" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jets</a>, it definitely did, as Malkin delivered a vicious slash to defenseman Logan Stanley. Now, the NHL is responding with a severe punishment.



“Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for slashing Winnipeg’s Logan Stanley,” as announced by @NHLPlayerSafety on X (formerly Twitter).



<h2>No hearing</h2>



According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> and the Players’ Association (NHLPA), all fines over the $5,000 figure require a hearing with the Department of Player Safety.

“We’re gonna have to take it day by day. Obviously, J.T. missed a fair amount of training camp, as did [Artemi Panarin]. So, those two guys are jumping on a moving train,” Sullivan admitted, via The Athletic’s Vince Mercogliano.

“When you miss that much time, it’s not easy to jump back into an NHL game at NHL pace, even from a conditioning standpoint. I think those guys will get better with every game they play. <h2>Miller’s outing by the numbers</h2>



The former Vancouver Canucks forward had a very quiet night, which ironically led to much noise around him. Miller finished the night with 18:18 minutes of ice time in 24 shifts. However, he registered no shots on goal and recorded a plus/minus of -2. It’s Miller’s first game with a +/- of -2 and 0 SOG since January 16, 2025. Back then, Miller was still a Canuck.



<h2>Journey’s only just begun</h2>



While a disappointing start to the new season, Sullivan and the Rangers can’t let this defeat become bigger than it has to be. It’s time to put the loss behind them and focus on what’s next in the schedule. For Sullivan, bouncing back is key—nay, it’s imperative.

The former <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/pittsburgh-penguins" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Penguins</a>’ defenseman is now joining Bedard and the Blackhawks for the upcoming campaign.



After joining <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chicago</a> on a professional tryout contract (PTO) during training camp, Grzelcyk has now signed a one-year, $1 million deal with the Blackhawks.

However, with only days to go before opening night, he settled for less money to play alongside Bedard and the rejuvenated Hawks.

It seems Evgeni Malkin is entering the final season of his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins. His 20th <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> campaign in The Burgh may very well be his last in the City of Bridges. However, reports suggest he might be headed for the exit door before the season comes to an end.



“I would have to think the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida-panthers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Panthers</a> are on [Malkin’s list]. Not just because they’ve been one of the most successful teams. But also because Malkin makes his offseason home in the Miami-area,” Frank Seravalli commented on Insider Notebook.



“So, he’s nearby, and that would be a very strong fit. Particularly, as the contract lines up. They can probably set it up in a way with the retained salary that they could still use Barkov in the playoffs.”

Either way, the decision is his to make. Malkin’s contract includes a full no movement clause (NMC) so it’s up to him to waive it and allow for a trade to go through in the 2025-26 NHL season.

The dream of the NHL’s first three-peat of the 21st century would be very much alive in Sunrise. And if it comes down to a trade-deadline move for Malkin, the Panthers could hold an edge over the rest of the league.



<h2>Finns-Up</h2>



The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl/florida-panthers-stanley-cup-pursuit" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reigning Stanley Cup champions</a> are borrowing the motto of their neighbors, the Miami Dolphins, and putting their own twist on it. With Barkov sidelined long term, the Cats will look to fellow countrymen Anton Lundell and Eetu Luostarinen to step into bigger roles.

The former first-round selection in the 2020 NHL entry Draft has blossomed into a consistent point-scorer night in and night out for Philadelphia.



Meanwhile, Crosby and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/pittsburgh-penguins" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Penguins</a> have struggled to find such consistency in their latest draft picks. Regardless, some way or another Crosby has found a way to play with some of the best young talents in the league recently. During the 2025 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl/iihf-world-championship-winners-by-year" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IIHF World Championship</a>, the Pens’ captain was joined by Foerster and other youngsters. 



Though the early exit in the quarter-final stage was far from a pleasant surprise, Crosby was thrilled with what he saw on Foerster. Now he didn’t stutter to make that known to Tocchet, who will coach the 23-year-old in the City of Brotherly Love.

“Rick Tocchet said Sidney Crosby called him and told him he loved Tyson Foerster at the [IIHF] Worlds. Crosby commented Foerster was a sponge,” NBC Sports Philadelphia reporter Jordan Hall stated on his X account.

<h2>No need to panic</h2>



While fans in Pittsburgh won’t ever praise anything Philly-related, they can’t be mad at Crosby for doing so. After all, it’s not the first time the captain speaks highly of an <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> competitor. 



In times where much is speculated around Crosby’s future and a potential trade request out of The Burgh, the captain’s comments shouldn’t raise any alarms. It’s just another example of great sportsmanship from Crosby, who’s accustomed fans all across the continent to such behavior on his part.

<h2>Unlikely</h2>



The noise around Crosby and his future with the Penguins is impossible to miss. It’s loud, it’s exhausting, and it’s everywhere. Still, reports hint the rumors have no influence on Crosby or his camp. If anything, the captain is fully focused on righting the ship in the City of Bridges during the next NHL campaign.



“I have not had one single hint, whisper, or innuendo—from within that tight Sidney Crosby inner circle—where he has even hinted at or mentioned this as something that he’s thinking about or considering,” insider Frank Seravalli said on the FAN Pregame podcast.

Without further ado, it’s time for Crosby and the Penguins to block out the noise and face the rest of the NHL head-on. Few believe Pittsburgh can hold its ground, but being overlooked might be exactly what the Black and Yellow need to play their best hockey.
