The 2025-26 NHL offseason is bringing several salary-related moves involving both young and veteran players. Along those lines, one of the hottest talking points revolves around the annual salaries of two of the league’s biggest stars: Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals.
Ovechkin broke the NHL’s all-time goals record by surpassing Wayne Gretzky last season, making him a historic forward in the Capitals’ lineup. Crosby is no less in that comparison, as the Penguins’ icon still looks to write epic new chapters in his career.
Together, Crosby and Ovechkin are 77 years old, meaning both are in the final stages of their careers. In fact, both have been surrounded by speculation about their futures in Pittsburgh and Washington. Here’s a look at what each one represents financially.
Who earns more between Crosby and Ovechkin?
With a salary cap hit of $9.5 million annually, Ovechkin earns more compared to Crosby, who makes $8.7 million per year. The Capitals star is entering the final year of his contract signed in June 2021.

Crosby extended his deal with the Penguins on September 16, 2024, maintaining the same cap hit he had in his previous contracts. His deal runs through the end of the 2026-27 NHL season, giving him two more guaranteed years in Pittsburgh.

Will Ovechkin retire?
Ovechkin’s long career raises an intriguing question heading into the upcoming season: will the 39-year-old forward choose to retire at its conclusion? Earlier in the offseason, Washington faced controversy after promoting ticket sales under the claim that it would be Ovechkin’s final season with the team. However, that was quickly denied. For now, it all remains to be seen.
