This will be their 28th overall meeting. Italy are the slight favorites in head-to-head clashes, having celebrated a victory on 11 occasions so far; England have grabbed a triumph eight times to this day, and an equal number of eight games have ended in a draw.

Two football matches at the Olympic Stadium in Rome on June 8 and June 10, 1968, marked the winner of the UEFA Euro 1968. It was UEFA's third European Championship Finals, as Italy and the former Yugoslavia fought for the title. It took the Azzurri another 32 years to participate in a UEFA Euro Final. In the Euro 2000 Final, unfortunately for Italy, they lost to France 2-1 in the Netherlands. Then in Euro 2012, Italy lost another Final after suffering a tough 4-0 defeat to Spain in Ukraine.
