Inter Miami continue to fall behind in the race for the MLS Supporters’ Shield following a fourth consecutive defeat in a 2-1 loss to Toronto FC. Lionel Messi scored his 13th goal of the MLS season, but the effort was not enough to secure a victory as the squad continues to lose ground.
There are 13 games and 39 points remaining in the regular season, leaving room for Inter Miami to make up ground and avoid going 0-3 in available trophies in 2026. Sitting 10 points out of first place, the squad still holds a mathematical chance to contend for the honor.
While Inter Miami have another opportunity to avoid ending the season without silverware, the squad will continue aiming for positive results in MLS while staying in the title hunt despite trailing first-place Nashville by 10 points.
Which trophy can Inter Miami still win?
Inter Miami can avoid finishing the year without a title by competing in the 2026 Champions Cup. The Herons and Cruz Azul will clash on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026, at Nu Stadium in Miami for the annual match played between the MLS champion and the Liga MX monarch.

What is the Supporters’ Shield?
Unlike top leagues around the world, MLS determines its ultimate champion through a playoff system. The Supporters’ Shield was created to reward the team that earns the most points during the regular season.
The trophy earned its name because it was driven by a group of supporters who wanted to recognize the squad with the highest point total in regular-season play.
Does the MLS Supporters’ Shield count as an official title?
While awarded informally during the 1996, 1997, and 1998 seasons, the Supporters’ Shield became an official title in 1999, with D.C. United became the first official winner.
In addition, since 2006, the U.S. Soccer Federation has granted the winner of the MLS Supporters’ Shield and the winner of the MLS Cup spots to represent the country in the Concacaf Champions League.
