High-level sports often bring glory, fame, and success, but they also carry a darker side—and tennis is no exception. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/daniil-medvedev">Daniil Medvedev</a> is a clear example that titles and the No. 1 ranking are not always enough to bring peace of mind.



The Russian star reached the top of the ATP rankings in early 2022, just months after winning his first Grand Slam title at the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/us-open">US Open</a>, while also helping Russia win the Davis Cup and reaching multiple finals across the tour. Yet, those achievements seem far removed from the struggles he’s dealing with now.



Speaking to the press at the China Open, Medvedev delivered a strikingly candid reflection on the sport that made him a champion. “When I’m in life, I am calm. On the road, I’m calm. Whatever. I argue with my wife, I’m calm. I go play tennis and I go nuts, I go crazy. Tennis can drive you crazy. It drives me crazy,” he said. “You ask me why did I have a bad year? I don’t have the exact answer. It could be my second daughter. It could be my relationship with Gilles (Cervara)”.



The 29-year-old didn’t stop there, continuing to dissect the reasons behind his uneven form. “It could be that I became older and started thinking more than when I was younger. It could be just bad luck or maybe physically I was not feeling well somewhere. You never know,” he continued.

He later pointed to the grounding presence of his family, especially his wife and two daughters. “I definitely love my two daughters, I love my wife. It’s not a problem for me. Even if I play tennis worse somehow because I have a second daughter, I’m happy about it and I don’t care,” Medvedev added.

With 2025 marking the first season in which he hasn’t seriously contended for a Grand Slam title, Medvedev admitted he’s still searching for solutions. “For sure, I was concerned. I’m still concerned. I’m trying to find a way to show everyone that I’m capable of doing big things again,” he said of a year filled with ups and downs.

Currently ranked World No. 18, Daniil Medvedev is competing at the China Open, where he opened with a win over Cameron Norrie. That victory marked his first against a Top 50 opponent in three months, the last coming at the Halle Open against Alexander Zverev—an indication of the challenging stretch the Russian has faced.

<h2>Drawing parallels to the ‘Big Three’ era</h2>



Medvedev compared the current landscape to the early days of the “Big Three” — Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. Back then, Nadal and Federer appeared to have a stranglehold on tennis’s biggest prizes until Djokovic broke through and eventually surpassed them.



“I remember Roger and Rafa: when Rafa was 20 or 21, he had already won two or three Roland Garros titles,” Medvedev recalled. “When he won Wimbledon for the first time, it was his first Grand Slam outside Roland Garros. At that point, everyone thought they were going to share all the Grand Slams — and then this one Serbian guy came along a little later and won more than them”.



Medvedev knows the feeling of breaking through against an established order. In 2021, he defeated Djokovic to win the US Open, becoming the first player since 2004 outside of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Andy Murray to reach No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings.

Medvedev wasn’t the only top player to suffer an early departure at <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/wimbledon">Wimbledon</a> this year. Eighth seed Holger Rune was also knocked out in the opening round, losing to Chile’s Nicolas Jarry in a five-set thriller: 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.&nbsp;

The former World No. 1 ended a long-running drought with the victory.



Medvedev is set to play in his first ATP Tour final in 15 months. His last appearance in a decisive match came in March 2024, when he reached the final at the Indian Wells Masters 1000 but lost in straight sets to Carlos Alcaraz.



Now Daniil faces an even tougher challenge: ending his ongoing losing streak in finals and winning a title for the first time in over two years. His most recent tournament win came in May 2023, when he lifted the trophy at the Rome Masters 1000.



Since then, Medvedev has reached the final in five different tournaments—and lost every single one. In 2023, he was beaten by Novak Djokovic at the US Open and twice by Jannik Sinner at the China Open and Vienna Open. The following year, the young Italian got the better of him again at the Australian Open, followed by the aforementioned loss to Alcaraz at Indian Wells.

The road to the Halle final included some tough opponents for Medvedev, but none more formidable than in the semifinals. He defeated World No. 3 and second seed <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/alexander-zverev">Alexander Zverev</a> 7-6, 6-7, 6-4. “All the matches are very tight. When the matches are tight like today, they can go any way,” he said after the match, according to the ATP Tour’s official website. “It is very, very close. I am happy I managed to win. It is tough, he serves good. I had two games that I broke him.”

Later, Daniil expressed satisfaction with his performance. “I am happy with my level, I played great,” he said, though he regretted not closing the match out earlier to avoid a grueling third set. “I could have done much better when I had the break in the second but it is normal… I am happy to win in the end.”

After taking down Zverev, Daniil Medvedev will now face Aleksandr Bublik in the Halle final. Despite the unfavorable numbers in their recent matches, Alexander Zverev does not feel intimidated. “A lot of things happened in the past 18 months,” he said, making it clear that things could play out differently this time.

To reach the semifinals, the former World No. 1 defeated Daniel Altmaier and Quentin Halys in earlier rounds, before overcoming Alex Michelsen in Friday’s quarterfinal. He now looks to reach the fourth grass-court final of his professional career—and his second in Halle, after doing so in 2022.



<h2>Zverev faced issues against Cobolli</h2>



Although the quarterfinal matchup against Flavio Cobolli appeared relatively straightforward on paper, Zverev encountered unexpected difficulties. He felt unwell just minutes after the match began and had to take an unscheduled toilet break. “I felt fine before the match, and then out of nowhere I felt really, really bad and felt ill,” Alexander said, according to the official ATP Tour website.



“I went to throw up, and then 15 minutes later I felt okay again. So I don’t know what it was. I’ve never experienced that before, to be honest. Hopefully I will be fine the next couple of hours, when the adrenalin settles,” added the World No. 3. “After that, I think it was a pretty good match.”

“I saved a break point early in the second set and I was saying to myself, ‘I’m not playing good, he’s playing amazing, there is no way I will win this match’,” Daniil continued. “Then I managed to serve better, I won the tie-break somehow 7-5, finishing with an ace, and then I won Toronto, which gave me a confidence boost. I won the US Open two weeks later.”

<h2>Medvedev reflects on the rain-delayed match</h2>



The match itself was plagued by delays due to persistent rain, adding another layer of difficulty to an already challenging encounter. The contest was halted just as <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/lorenzo-musetti">Musetti</a> held match point, forcing both players to repeatedly adjust their preparations.

“They kept postponing the match—another 30 minutes, and another,” Medvedev explained. “It was raining, so I just kept doing physical exercises. I think Lorenzo [Musetti] was doing the same because at one point, I think we were supposed to return to the court, and then the hail started. So I just did the exercises, tried to be mentally prepared, because one point can decide the fate of the match”.



When play resumed, Medvedev was unable to turn the tide. “The score was close, but I couldn’t do it. I think it’s easier to play that match point when it’s your match point, and not when it’s against you,” he admitted. “I couldn’t allow myself to take risks, to play freely, because I wouldn’t forgive myself”.



“I had to let him play on match point,” he added. “But he has the match point. If he loses it, it will be deuce, so he can allow himself to hit it as hard as he wants to, to hit a winner, and that’s what he did. So yeah, that’s why I’m disappointed”.

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/carlos-alcaraz">Carlos Alcaraz</a> and Alexander Zverev missed a prime opportunity to reduce the points gap with World No. 1 Jannik Sinner while the Italian served a three-month suspension for testing positive in a doping case in 2024. World No. 10 Daniil Medvedev expressed surprise at Alcaraz’s performances in recent months, considering the Spaniard’s potential.



During his absence, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jannik-sinner">Sinner</a> missed four Masters 1000 events and several ATP 500 tournaments, but Alcaraz and Zverev showed inconsistency and failed to capitalize on the chance to close the rankings gap.



Alcaraz secured the Monte Carlo Masters and the ATP Rotterdam title, but inconsistent performances in other tournaments left him unable to overtake Sinner. The Spaniard even dropped to No. 3 in the rankings behind <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/alexander-zverev">Zverev</a>, though he now has the chance to regain the No. 2 spot at the ongoing Masters of Rome. Alcaraz started strong in Rome, winning his opening match and expressing surprise at his performance.



Zverev, on the other hand, managed only the Munich ATP title during Sinner’s suspension, marking his second final appearance this year after losing to Sinner at the Australian Open.

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/daniil-medvedev">Medvedev</a> was particularly surprised by Alcaraz’s inability to capitalize, noting the Spaniard’s capability to dominate any opponent on a good day. “I know Carlos and Sascha had big chances to get a lot of points and catch him. But they played strong opponents, and everyone wants to win,” Medvedev told Sky Sports. “Carlos said that it did put pressure on him, but I would be a little bit surprised because Carlos is so strong. He can beat anyone on a good day”.

<h2>Medvedev on Sinner’s return to the Tour</h2>



Sinner is set to return to competition at the Masters of Rome, opening against Mariano Navone. This marks the Italian’s comeback after a three-month suspension imposed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).



Amid the circumstances, Medvedev shared his excitement about Sinner’s return. “I actually saw something Jannik said, and I can tell from my side I am really happy to have him back. I respect Jannik a lot and I am really happy to see him back on tour,” the Russian stated.



<h2>Alcaraz and Zverev battle for ATP No. 2 Ranking in Rome</h2>



The Rome Masters holds added significance for Alcaraz and Zverev as they vie for the World No. 2 ranking. For Alcaraz to reclaim the No. 2 spot, he needs to reach at least the semifinals or rely on Zverev failing to defend his 2024 title. If Zverev defends his title, he will retain his ranking.

“I think it’s the first time I’m so nervous giving a speech,” Medvedev said. “First of all, I want to say sorry to Novak’s fans. We all know what was at stake today, what you achieved this year (2021) and throughout your career… I’ve never said this to anybody before, but I’ll say it now: you’re the greatest tennis player in history”.

<h2>The record that slipped away from Djokovic</h2>



During his U.S. Open victory speech, Medvedev referenced what was “at stake” that day—Djokovic’s quest to make history. A win in that final would have made Djokovic the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win all four Grand Slam titles in a calendar year. Djokovic had already claimed the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon in 2021, but Medvedev halted his run with a straight-sets victory, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.



<h2>Medvedev vs. the Big Three</h2>



As Medvedev began to make waves on the ATP Tour, his encounters with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/roger-federer">Federer</a>, Nadal, and Djokovic became defining moments of his career. The Russian faced Federer three times but was unable to secure a victory, with Federer winning all their matches.



The rivalry with Nadal is similarly one-sided, with Nadal leading 5-1. Medvedev’s lone win came in the semifinals of the 2021 ATP Finals. Lastly, Medvedev has faced Djokovic 15 times, with the Serbian leading their head-to-head 10-5. 



Despite this, Medvedev’s most iconic victory came in the 2021 U.S. Open final, where he denied Djokovic the chance to achieve a historic calendar-year Grand Slam.

Former World No. 1 and 2021 US Open champion <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/daniil-medvedev">Daniil Medvedev</a> has become one of the most successful players born in the 1990s. He is, alongside retired Dominic Thiem, the only player from that decade to have won a Grand Slam title. But, who would the Russian star choose to build his perfect player?



In an interview with the ATP Tour from September 2023, Medvedev was asked to choose the best shots from any player, retired or active, including himself. For the forehand, he chose <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/roger-federer">Roger Federer.</a> “I think that was his best shot. Also, the way he set up with the slice for his forehand—once you hit it to that side, you were in trouble,” he said.



Then, for backhand, he went with Dominic Thiem. “Just because I love when he smashes his backhand down the line or cross-court. I think he does it really well,” he said. Meanwhile, for serve, he picked Nick Kyrgios. “Especially for his height. He has one of the best serves ever. The combination of his power and precision is probably the best,” he explained.



For the return, he went with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/novak-djokovic">Novak Djokovic</a>. “The way he returns throughout his career is unreal,” Medvedev explained. Then, for the slice, he chose Steve Johnson and Federer. He also chose the Swiss star again for the net game, as well as Kyrgios. “I’ve played against both, and when they come to the net, it’s just so tough to do anything against them,” he told.

For touch, he chose Fabrice Santoro, while in speed, he said he would go with himself. “Carlos Alcaraz is unbelievably fast—maybe the fastest I’ve ever seen—but I love the way I run, so I’ll go with myself,” he said. He also chose Djokovic for his “unbelievable” flexibility.

<h2>What about Rafael Nadal?</h2>



Medvedev didn’t forget <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/rafael-nadal">Rafael Nadal,</a> whom he chose for mental toughness. “Some of the matches he has won, the way he fights—it’s incredible. To be honest, all three—Roger, Rafa, and Novak—have that toughness, but I’ll go with Rafa,” he explained.



Meanwhile, he went for both Nadal and Djokovic for competitiveness. “We’re all competitive, but I have to pick Rafa and Novak. What they’ve achieved in their careers, and the matches we’ve witnessed between them, have been amazing,” he explained.

Daniil Medvedev has reached the world No. 1 ranking in men’s singles, a position determined by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Over his career, he has claimed 20 ATP Tour-level singles titles, highlighted by his victory at the 2021 US Open and his triumph at the 2020 ATP Finals.



Medvedev was also the first player outside the Big Four to reach the top ranking since Andy Roddick in 2004. He is also the third Russian man to achieve this milestone, following Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin, and the 27th player overall to hold the No. 1 spot.

Just a few days into the tournament, and with the main stars yet to make their debuts, the Indian Wells Masters 1000 has already sparked numerous comments from players regarding the change in surface that has been implemented for this edition of the event. Carlos Alcaraz, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/alexander-zverev">Alexander Zverev</a>, and Daniil Medvedev have all shared their thoughts on the matter.



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/tennis/world-no-3-carlos-alcaraz-expresses-displeasure-over-unexpected-change-at-indian-wells">Alcaraz, the current No. 3 in the ATP rankings, expressed his displeasure over the unexpected surface change at Indian Wells.</a> “The court is a bit faster,” the young Spaniard said during a press conference this week after arriving in California. “It’s something I didn’t quite understand when I saw it. This tournament has been played on the same surface for 25 years, on the same court, but now it’s changed. I don’t know the reason, honestly.”



This candid statement from <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/carlos-alcaraz">Alcaraz</a> led to follow-up questions at the press conferences of other stars, many of whom had their first training sessions on the new surface in the past few days. What stands out, however, is the stark contrast in opinions.



“I will be honest with you, it’s okay. I like Indian Wells, I even like the courts now, but they seem to be almost slower than before, very slow,” explained <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/daniil-medvedev">Daniil Medvedev</a>, according to Tennis.com. “I played two days, and they seemed very, very slow.”

The Russian star, currently ranked No. 6 in the world, acknowledged that he was still in the early stages of training on the new surface. “I just had two days, jet-lagged,” he said. “I don’t know what other players think… so let’s see how it plays during the tournament.”

<h2>Zverev’s view</h2>



Another prominent figure at Indian Wells will be Alexander Zverev, currently ranked No. 2 in the ATP standings. He is aiming for his first title of 2025 and his first-ever win in the California desert during his tenth appearance at the event.



Asked about the surface change, the German star gave a surprising response. “There’s a new surface? Feels the same to me, to be honest,” he said. “I practiced here for four days, and I didn’t notice it. Didn’t know anything about it.”



<h2>The most awaited debuts at Indian Wells</h2>



A couple of days into the tournament, some of the top players in the ATP rankings will make their <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/indian-wells">Indian Wells</a> debuts on Friday. Alexander Zverev, the best-ranked player in the tournament due to Jannik Sinner’s suspension, will face Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands in the round of 64. Additionally, Casper Ruud will play against Marcos Giron, while Medvedev will take on Bu Yunchaokete. Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic will make their debuts on Saturday.
