We’ve all had those. … But at the end of the day, if he plays this game for a long time, he’s going to have more opportunities to go both directions. To throw it away, or to complete that ball.”
Big Ben not only believes that Pickett should trust his gut and go for it, but he also thinks the play-calling should favor the young signal-caller. For him, the team should lean on the passing game.
“You can’t be a predictable offense,” Roethlisberger said. “I’m not saying that they are, but if feels like what I’m hearing from guys is we’ve got to do something different. <h2>Tomlin Lauds The Browns’ Running Game</h2>
Steelers and Browns were quite close for most of the game before the home team dominated late. Tomlin had no choice but to tip his hat off and give them a lot of credit for how they dominated the tempo:
“I think if you’re playing these guys, and you’re looking at their offense, boy you better minimize Chubb and Hunt,” said Tomlin. “A lot of ball rolls to those guys. They’re not 1 and 2, they’re 1 and 1A. They are a formidable tandem and probably the most complete tandem in football, so we’ve got our work cut out for us there.”
“I thought they controlled the line of scrimmage, particularly in the second half,” added Tomlin. “If you can’t slow down Chubb, you can’t beat this group. And we knew that, and we didn’t get it done. So, we got to own the outcome, and we will. There’s not a lot really to talk about. We got to look at this tape and learn and get better and get better very fast.”

We all knew this was going to be a tough season for the Steelers, and rookie QBs often need a year on the sidelines before being ready to step up. Still, one can only wonder if Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph are the guys you want mentoring your future franchise QB.

For those who do not know who<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/who-are-the-last-10-super-bowl-winners" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Richard Sherman</a> is, he is a cornerback with 11 seasons in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/nfl-2022-2023-when-does-the-next-season-start-20220213-0008.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NFL</a>, his first team was the Seattle Seahawks from 2011 to 2017, he also played another three seasons with the 49ers before joining the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/super-bowl-2023-where-and-when-will-the-super-bowl-lvii-be-played-20220212-0034.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Buccaneers in 2021</a>. Currently Sherman is a free agent.
The criticism against Pickett is not only from Sherman, but other media outlets and reporters have also spoken about Pickett’s main issue, his small hands. But Pickett was a top notch college quarterback with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/sports/ncaa-college-football-2021-lists-of-the-FBS-conferences-for-this-season-20210824-0024.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pitt Panthers</a>.
Kenny Pickett’s short hands were never an obstacle to win 33 games during his five years with Pitt, and Pickett collected 12,303 passing yards, 1045/1674 passes, 81 touchdowns and 32 interceptions, 20 rushing TDs and 801 rushing yards.

Pickett’s hands size measured at at 8½ inches and is not a bad size, it’s just that when a quarterback has small hands it can lead to more fumbles than normal. Other big names in the NFL wore gloves for several years of their careers: Peyton Manning and Ben Roethlisberger.

Pickett was touted as one of the most NFL-ready QBs in the nation. However, his small hands (8.625 inches)raised plenty of red flags among scouts and prompted countless jokes on social media.
Then again, that wasn’t enough to scare away <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/black-head-coaches-in-the-nfl-who-have-won-a-super-bowl-20220224-0020.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Steelers GM</a> Kevin Colbert. Per him, his scouts, and the team personnel, it was clear that Pickett had what it take to thrive in Pittsburgh, regardless of the size of his hands.

“Honestly, I never paid attention to that,” Colbert said. “We look at the results. We watch Kenny play in our environment. Can he throw the football? Absolutely. Did he have an excessive fumble rate? No, he didn’t. We just judge it on how he played. He’s the most prepared [QB] coming out.”

<h2>Mike Tomlin Doesn’t Care About Pickett’s Hand Size</h2>
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin had a pretty similar take about his rookie QB. They’ve already seen him play at Heinz Field, he doesn’t turn the ball over a lot, and he’s proven that he can be successful there. So, what’s not to like?
“I potentially was capable of buying into that if I didn’t watch him play college football in Pittsburgh and deal with the elements that come with playing in this environment,” Tomlin said on The Rich Eisen Show.
“So you can buy into the hand size thing or you can just look at how he performed in a variety of conditions, and we have those conditions in Pittsburgh,” Tomlin added. “So there was very little speculation from our perspective about how he might handle the ball in inclement weather, wet days, etc. They played North Carolina on a Thursday night, I went to the game, it was raining pretty good that night and he had no issues.”

Pickett has the smallest hands among QBs in the NFL, trailing Saints’ Taysom Hill (8.7 inches). He’s far below the league average of 9.7 inches, but he can sure throw the hell out of the football, and that’s all that matters.

“He certainly has a chance [to be Steelers’ Week 1 starter]. I agree with that sentiment of his readiness from a professional perspective,” Tomlin said, as quoted by ClutchPoints.
“It was two things that really attracted us to him from a floor standpoint,” the coach added.“We thought he had pro-level anticipation [and] we thought he had pro-level accuracy. Often times those are two variables that really require a lot of adjustment from a quarterback’s standpoint. We felt he came ready-made in those ways, and hopefully that’s an asset to him in terms of being able to compete and being ready if performance dictates it.”

Pickett is coming off an impressive career at Pittsburgh and already knows Heinz Field. He’s got the arm strength and accuracy to at least put a lot of pressure on the rest of the Steelers’ QB room.
So, even if most rookie QBs need to spend one or two years on the sidelines to get a grasp of the playbook and get NFL-ready, it seems like the Steelers might be looking to send their young star right into the foxhole from the gate.
