The New York Mets are slowly beginning to get their season on track in MLB with hard-fought wins. However, Bo Bichette is still far from his best form at the plate, although Carlos Mendoza maintains that he is one of the best players in the league at his position.

“It feels like every day there’s one at-bat where he hits a rocket and somebody’s making a play. I’m not worried about him. The ball’s gonna find holes. He’s too good of a hitter,” the manager said.

The latest loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks exposed these struggles from Bichette in a key area of the field. Can Queens’ star player finally raise his level heading into what’s next?

Bo Bichette’s numbers at the plate in 2026

Bo Bichette has endured a difficult start to the 2026 season with the New York Mets, struggling to find his rhythm at the plate. Through 32 games, he is batting just .226 with 2 home runs and 16 RBIs, a significant drop from his career average of .291.

His struggles are largely attributed to a decrease in effectiveness against fastballs, hitting only .194 against them compared to his previous .306 mark. While an overly aggressive approach and timing issues have led to several routine outs, advanced metrics suggest he has also been quite unlucky; he leads the league in hits lost to exceptional defensive plays, and his expected batting average (xBA) sits much higher at .292, indicating a potential for a rebound if his luck turns.

Mendoza has depth options in that spot on the field

Carlos Mendoza has begun exploring different internal options to maintain New York‘s offensive production. While Bichette has recently been forced back to shortstop due to injuries to Francisco Lindor (calf strain) and Ronny Mauricio (fractured thumb), his slumping bat has opened the door for Mark Vientos and Brett Baty to see more consistent action at the corners.

Additionally, the recent promotion of Vidal Brujan from Triple-A Syracuse provides Mendoza with a versatile defensive substitute, allowing the team to rotate the infield mix as they look for a reset to snap their current losing streak.
