Sam Darnold has reportedly decided not to return to the Minnesota Vikings. After not receiving the expected contract extension before free agency, the quarterback could be the ideal option to replace Geno Smith with the Seattle Seahawks, according to a report from Tom Pelissero.
“With the Geno Smith trade opening up a spot in Seattle, Sam Darnold is not expected to return to the Vikings, who are now focusing on other options they’ve been pursuing in recent weeks, sources tell The Insiders. These options include re-signing Daniel Jones, who is considering multiple opportunities.”
Despite the Vikings looking like a Super Bowl contender, head coach Kevin O’Connell seems ready to hand the reins to J.J. McCarthy, which is why Darnold is preparing to seek a new opportunity elsewhere.
Is Sam Darnold a free agent in 2025?
Yes. Sam Darnold is a free agent and, seeing that the Vikings don’t consider him the franchise quarterback of the future, he is ready to leave Minnesota. Pelissero notes that McCarthy is the chosen one to replace him, despite his inexperience.
“Last year’s first-round pick, J.J. McCarthy, is expected to be cleared to practice this spring after missing his rookie season because of meniscus surgery. With Darnold on the way out, McCarthy’s time could be coming sooner than later. But they still want to add a veteran.”
Also, considering that Darnold will be a free agent, Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers would be interested in the quarterback according to a report from Albert Breer. The big question is whether they are willing to pay the high price that would come with giving him a massive contract extension.
