In the second period, the bad news was confirmed. The Bruins announced that star forward Marchand had suffered an upper-body injury and was unlikely to return to the ice. The 36-year-old forward’s absence, however, was no obstacle to defeating Crosby‘s Pens, who remain in last place in the Metropolitan Division.

“I haven’t heard anything yet,” reacted interim coach Sacco. “He obviously didn’t return to the game. I’ll probably know more tomorrow. I have to look at the play again. I thought that he was tripped into the boards and it was a little bit of a shove in there, too, which put him in a tough spot. I thought we should have at least been on the power play from there,” he said.

It’s not just Coach Sacco who sent word about Marchand’s exit against the Penguins. No one on the Bruins is clear on the status of their star player, but they have received the news with concern. “It’s never good to lose your captain and especially a player like ‘Marchy,’ who never lays on the ice. Hopefully he’s going to be all right and he’ll be back soon enough, because he’s always a big part of our group,” Bruins right wing David Pastrnak said.

Marchand is the Bruins’ captain and has 47 points on 21 goals and 26 assists in 61 games this season. This is the 16th NHL appearance for the four-time All-Star, who is coming off a 4 Nations Face-Off win with Team Canada alongside Crosby, his Saturday afternoon opponent.
