Not long ago, the soccer community in South America was shocked when Chile called up Stoke-on-Trent-born Ben Brereton Diaz, son to an English father and a Chilean mother. Now, La Roja have another foreign player on their ranks as Robbie Robinson was called up by Martin Lasartefor the South American2022 World Cup Qualifiers triple-fixture.
The Inter Miami forward has had an impressive performance in the 2021 MLS Regular Season so far, scoring 4 goals in 11 appearances. The Clemson University product has certainly caught the eye of the Uruguayan manager that is currently at the helm of Chile.
Like it happened with Brereton, Lasarte saw in him a young, interesting option for La Roja’s offense. Robinson, 22, will face a massive opportunity at the senior international stage.
Why is Robbie Robinson eligible for Chile?
Bornin Camden, South Carolina, many people may have not considered Robinsoncould be eligible for another country. But he is. His father is also American but his mother, instead, was born in Chile.
Robbie Robinsonis also eligible for Chile because he has their citizenship, proving he has his mother’s Chileanheritagedeeply inside him. He has previously said he would be glad to play for the US or La Roja.
Once he steps into the fieldfor Chile, however, he won’t be able to represent the USA anymore. Therefore, accepting Lasarte’s invitation was a big decision made by Robinson, who would be tied forever to the Chilean national team once he plays an official game.
