Aaron Boone has been trying every kind of roster adjustment with the New York Yankees, and one of the next big decisions the team may soon make involves Luis Gil — a player whose uncertain status has drawn fan attention over the past few seasons.
Gil recently threw in a live session, though it wasn’t against typical hitters. He faced bullpen catcher Peter Serruto and information coordinator Ryan McLaughlin, which still marked a notable step in his recovery and hinted at a possible future role with the Yankees — something Boone confirmed is on the table.
“Aaron Boone said the Yankees are thinking of Luis Gil as a Trade Deadline acquisition if everything goes right, so think late July/early August,” reported Bryan Hoch on X, revealing how the team may view Gil’s timeline as a potential internal addition.
Gil showing good velocity during throwing session
According to Max Goodman and Bryan Hoch, this was Gil’s first live throwing session since suffering a high-grade lat strain during spring training. “Gil facing hitters for the first time since his injury in late February. Velocity believed to be mid-90s,” Hoch shared.
“It’s important,” Boone said about the live session. “Fortunately, after the setback, it’s been a slow buildup, but it’s gone well, it feels like, every step of the way. So, that’s been encouraging.”
When could Gil return to the mound for the Yankees?
Boone didn’t offer a return date but emphasized that the process remains gradual: “And now, we start to build. Now we start to build lives, pitch counts and then eventually, now, getting into rehab games. So, definitely another important box to check.” For now, the Yankees will continue to wait.
