The Toronto Blue Jays are making their intentions clear in this MLB free agency. Following the high-profile signing of Anthony Santander for $92.5 million, the Canadian team is looking to further bolster its roster. And the name generating the most buzz across the league is Max Scherzer.

Although injuries limited Scherzer to just nine starts in 2024, raising concerns about his durability for 2025, his track record speaks for itself. In 2022, during his stint with the New York Mets, he posted an outstanding 2.29 ERA across 23 starts. Despite being 40 years old, many in the league still believe he has plenty left to offer.

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Blue Jays have emerged as the frontrunners to land the veteran pitcher. Toronto’s interest in Scherzer has been one of the worst-kept secrets of the offseason. “Toronto has been hot for him for about two months,” a source told Feinsand. “The Blue Jays certainly feel like the favorites to get him.”

A high-profile addition to the Blue Jays’ rotation

While the Blue Jays, like any interested team, are mindful of the risks associated with Scherzer’s injury history, they also recognize the opportunity to add an eight-time All-Star, three-time Cy Young Award winner, and two-time World Series champion.

If Max Scherzer joins Toronto, he would strengthen a rotation that already features standouts like Kevin Gausman and José Berríos. Bowden Francis and Chris Bassitt also seem locked into their spots, while Yariel Rodríguez could take on a long-relief role.
